Has anyone actually confirmed this with CA yet? It could just be a CYA move on Toyota's part. (I guess this is a question to the wider audience).

I re read the letter yesterday and it sounded like a pretty concrete thing, however if your car isn't due for smog I wonder if there is something in the online system that would keep you from renewing your registration.

I haven't spoke to DMV, but an asst. service manager working with a large group of us says it is a thing. Past recalls they have seen registration hung up for people. Not sure how quickly DMV jumps on it. I may make an appointment for may in advance and see what my registration renewal notice says when it comes around April (reg due June 1)

The CA language was in mine as well, even though I'm 3000 miles away. I was primarily thinking out loud that it may be Toyota doesn't know if it is applicable but close enough that they felt it should be covered. I guess if somehow this is IDed as an emissions correction it would fit.

Not sure how it works. But I know the dealers have the request to submit proof of completion in their system as well so likely has to be done. I have no idea how it's emission related though

Someone might have considered the possibility of dropping a valve and running on three cylinders but that wouldn't last long on an FA20. Bye bye oil pressure - bye bye everything else soon after.

IMHO, this whole recall is idiotic. The flawed parts already failed long ago. The rest of this is paranoid nonsense based on fear of litigation. Total waste.

You'll need an orange recall proof of correction card from the dealership.

No, I get all that. I was just questioning whether or not CA-DMV considers this an emissions recall or a safety recall. It may be that they leave that up to Toyota, and Toyota has flagged it as that. Either way, seems like the safe route, from a registration standpoint, is to have it done.

It's a recall of an engine part. Since the engine produces the emissions, and some of the valves in particular let the emissions out of the engine, I can't imagine that they wouldn't consider that an emissions recall.

BTW, I found this safety (not emissions) recall of the Prius:

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...4V053-8582.pdf

And California people discussing their registration renewals being rejected for it:

https://priuschat.com/threads/califo...quired.180018/

So I'm not sure it matters whether it's flagged specifically as an emissions recall.

That would be fun! A DIY. We will make sure:
  • there is proper amount of cleaning around electrical or fluid connections before cracking them,
  • the mating surfaces of covers when separating them are not buggered,
  • nothing is dropped into an oil gallery while it's apart,
  • mating surfaces are cleaned well enough before applying new sealant, and properly degreased, this is critical,
  • there are no busted electrical connectors or bent pins when reassembling,
  • there are no over-tightened vulnerable 6 or 8 millimeter fasteners because "we will use a torque wrench on those!"
And whatever happens, make sure we do not rush or ignore the evacuation step before charging the AC.
I'm good with any lager or pilsner. And why can't I make the chicken?

"A Subaru spokesman told CR that there is a low risk of the engine problem occurring and that the automaker is recalling “the entire population of vehicles that could possibly be affected out of an abundance of caution. The company estimates that about 0.1 percent of the recalled models will experience the problem. The automaker says it is not aware of any crashes related to this issue."
https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...sues-stalling/

From Newsweek: "In the U.S., about 25,000 Scion FR-S models that were manufactured between March 2012 and July 2013 are being recalled."

So if my math is correct that's 25 out of 25,000 2013 FR-S that maybe be affected.

At my low mileage, 22K, I think I'll pass for now.

OK, you can bake/fry your own chicken. What do you need? A deep fat fryer? Just an oven? Bring your own oil (if it's special) and secret ingredients. What breed and age of chicken do you require?
