This is the degeneration pathway:

first you pick up the wrong car keys and try to start the other car

second you forget your wallet

third you forget the list of stops and the list of things you were going to buy at the store

fourth you forget the stop where you were going to do the main thing you went out for, because it wasn't on the list

fifth you get in the car and forget why you were going anywhere
