Something that's been bugging me

I always see people who buy wider wheels but almost never lower the offset.
Like everyone who goes to a 17x8, but instead of going to a +35 they only go to a +45.
A 9" wheel should drop your offset to +23/22 if you want to keep the same amount of width added evenly.

I would think that you would want to keep the added width the same on each side of the mounting point.

Anyone wanna chime in?
I feel like the only one who even thinks about this kind of stuff.

I can understand going even lower because of flares and changing track, ect.
But this is more for those who are just doing wheels for a slightly wider tire.

Depends on goals one is getting wider wheels for.
For some it's to fit wider tires for more grip, those often wouldn't want to also increase scrub radius, that may add torque steer in AWD/FWD cars, make steering heavier and increase suspension motion ratio.
For some it's flush fitment. Then yes, offset is common way to reach that.

As for wheel width and offset correlation, you got it wrong. Added wheel/tire width on both sides of wheel will be same/even only with same offset. Because offset - is from wheel center line, not from one wheel side to anywhere else, be it car body sideline or hub or some suspension part. Going from 7" +45 to 8" +45 will add half an inch on both sides from that centerline. Offset from centerline, not to car body sides. If you are after flush fitment, then you should think for both wheel width & offset to get just outer side of wheel spaced out that much as you need. Summing up half of wheel width increase with lessening positive offset.

So many varibles. I have tried different wheel offsets (by using spacers) for my 18×9 wheels. +42, +37, +32, +30, And +27.

Depending on what offset the wheel is available in, suspension used, camber, drop amount, tire size,
how you use your car (DD track autox etc...), and look desired: Will change what width and offest people choose.

I don't think people are going out of their way to buy wheels like that.

It's just that wheel selection from manufacturers (especially big/non-rep companies) don't often have offsets like that for those sizes of wheels. Adding on the 5x100 pattern reduces the pool of available wheels even more

I tend not to let other peoples' decisions bother me, especially if they don't affect me in any way. Try it.

17x9 +22 would poke a lot past the fenders. Wouldn't really be appropriate unless you're going for the stanceyboi look with lots of camber.

Edit: it looks like your calculations are wrong anyways. 17x9 +22 would keep the same position on the inside of the suspension, and only add width on the outside. What you're describing would require having the exact same offset as stock, +48

I have no idea what the offset even means. I only understand diameter and width. So I only look at those two
