Oh, is there something wrong with them? I don't think lowering the valves is a good idea anyway, but it probably should have come from the factory that way.

Lol that's a whole lot of work. I really don't want to send my car in, especially to a Toyota dealership with no experience with boxers, but I don't think I'm at the point I can do it myself yet...

Never too early to start building those skills. We didn't have the internet when I started as a child. It's all just grownup Legos.

Nab a salvage long block so you can swap them and take your time.

Lets just wait for the paper mailings that will be sent out in December. No reason to speculate on the repair process yet.

Sit back an wait for those first few early adopters to do it and read about the ensuing horror stories of them having to take their vehicles back 2-3 times before things are right. Let's not forget about the imminent hassle of fighting with the dealership to cover a rental car for the 12+ hours you're going to be without your car each time.

Good times ahead my friends!

I agree with what another member said, it'd probably be easier and less intricate labor to just swap the entire engine out with a crate motor from Subaru.

Any way you look at it, this is a huge fuckup for Subaru!

Meh. Vendors vend. It's always been a numbers game. I genuinely appreciate a heads-up over a cover up. They're doing right by us.

I agree that proceeding with the recall process was the right move. However, I don't think they've quite worked out the logistics of how the repair will be accomplished by the dealership service departments.

I realize Tcoat likes to give service techs the benefit of the doubt, but I don't. I've read and heard lots of stories of incompetent techs that have made epic fails out of much easier jobs than this one. I just don't have the confidence that they would be able to easily pull off a job of this complexity.

A buddy of mine who is a mechanic said the following: "Manufacturers don't like to change out parts. They cost money. So they're probably just gonna drop your engine down a little bit, pressurize your cylinders through the spark plug hole and change the valve springs like that. They will find the cheapest way possible to fix it"

Not sure if what he's describing is relevant for boxer engines, but just thought his comment was interesting.

Nope. Zero trust in others' service ethic. I've worked alongside way too many of the best and brightest to ignore that reality.
