Kinda silly to me when I spent 10 years in the Nihon land and you could get a used R32/R33 for reasonable prices average middle class people could afford.

It always was a novelty item over here in the States.
R32 and R33 GTRs are way less than LHD Supra TTs in Canada.

I think it was Mercedes USA who first lobbied the bill, because they were sick of losing sales to people who imported the better ones from Europe.

True…

But I'm talking way beyond that. Stupid things from the 1970s like key buzzers and parking brake indicators that need to say "PARK" as opposed to the pictogram "((!))" and other such trivial annoyances that turn in to huge R&D, manufacturing and inventory management nightmares globally. Sure, a key buzzer may be a $0.05 part, but I need 10,000,000 of them and I need to manage it… times all the other stupid DOT/NHTSA mandated nonsense. What is it, 1,000,000 miles for homologation in the USA these days?

We have a very strong JDM import industry in Australia (every kid and his dog has a silvia or skyline). I could buy a HP monster fully JDM modded 34 GTR track car for 20 grand. But if you got caught swapping a VIN or selling an uncomplied vehicle for road use the powers that be would rape you all the way back to Japan.

Geeez, really? I'm always eyeballing blue R34 GT-Rs on exchange.goo-net.com and they rarely drop below ¥3.5million (roughly $45k). I'd love to import one to Europe in the future, guess I'll have to snag an Aussie one instead of buying from the mainland.

I always thought it would be a neat idea to make an RB26 powered kit car to legally satisfy this market for US Skylines. Kinda like a Factory Five GTM, but with styling that apes the R34 instead of generic supercar styling, and a front-mounted RB instead of a mid-mounted LSx.

A buddy showed me a few pics of a white Skyline with WI plates he saw driving around GB. Not sure if it was one of the two involved. It seems that this whole fiasco is common knowledge among auto enthusiasts in the area though.

We also had a beautiful white S15 Silvia here in GB that was apparantly crushed as well. Such a shame.

I'm in Green Bay, WI BTW.

"It's made worse by the fact that in just a few short years, both cars will be exempt from federal safety and emissions standards for vehicles over 25 years old."

A few short years? The cars were 95' and 96. A few short years sounds like 2-3, not 8 or 9

How you know this is ALL about money and lobbyists...

You can build a car from scrap metal and fiberglass all the way into a running vehicle with no air-bags, no crash safety bs, and emissions, etc. and still legally register it as vehicle for public road use, but not import a car manufactured with tons of R&D, and suitable safety features, without jumping through 5 million hoops and paying out the ass to the gubment to make it "safe for the street"?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$, beaucracy and politics, that's all it is. So next time you say "i feel no sympathy for...", remember that this is supposed to be the land of the free, a true nation of free men and women, who's government is supposed to reflect THEIR beliefs, and what they find important and not important, not lobbyists. Yet Canada can import car's much easier...

That was a bit lowball (car would be thrashed) but yeah, some crazy prices on track only imports.
