Windshield Protection? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I never had this problem until I moved to Texas, but driving on the highways all the time there's bound to be rockchips that hit my windshield. Since I've gotten my FR-S, it seems to be happening more frequently (maybe because of how low it is?). I've already gotten three little chips in the windshield and althought they aren't cracks it still bothers the crap out of me.

Does anyone else have this problem and is there any sort of protection you guys recommend for it?

buy a new windshield every 4-5 years if you're so anal about rock chips

or just don't drive so close to the cars in front of you.

Take out the windshield and drive slower? Your face is much softer, it won't chip as much!

I picked up a bottle of zaino glass polish (abbrasive polish). Haven't used it yet and not sure if your chips are too deep, but everything I've heard is that it works great.

It usually isn't recommended to use polish on windshields. In order to polish away a scratch or chip, you need to lower the level of the glass around it. When you do this, you're changing the thickness of the glass. This creates a lensing effect and will distort what you see.

You can always get the chips filled at a glass shop (if theyre deep enough). But these days, its something youre just going to have to deal with.

I can already tell you that keeping a distance from trucks or other cars wont do you any good. i recommended driving during the time when there arent alot of trucks on the road or take a road that has less trucks. i know some people say its not good to opticoat the windshield, and it will wear(ware?) down over time, but i think i might look more into anyways.

I purposely take the long way to work every day just to avoid the construction and all the trucks.

lol, you live in VA though so its not too bad

i got a 15mile hwy that i usually take that runs through the industrial area. so its 18 wheelers, and load trucks everywhere. my other route is currently under major construction, and will also take me an extra 20mins to get where i want

I-81 here is all trucks, right in the middle of the east coast trucking route.

it's about the same for me. 20mile commute, almost all highway and most of it load trucks and 18wheelers as well. Taking smaller roads would only double my trip.

and i can tell you I'm extremely cautious about how fast I drive and when I'm behind these trucks.. but thanks haha

Just don't drive the car. Take a bus. Best protection ever. Just keep it in a car cover forever.
