Autos in high powered drag cars are good.

Autos in high powered "supercars" is sometimes good.

Auto's in NA 4 bangers with minimal hp, not so much.

But, like everything, people will like whatever they like and argue their point of view.

Buses are also good with autos.

Taxis are also good with autos.

Daily hacks which spend time in go-stop traffic are good with autos for people who get frustrated easily.

Autos for people who cannot drive manuals due to not having access to manuals, or because they cannot touch their nose with their finger when their eyes are closed is also good.

As for the issues with manuals, yeap I've worn out clutches punishing them at the drags doing big launches, I've chewed case hardening of gears from running big block torque through gear boxes.

But, in all my years it has never worried me, it does give the autophiles ammo to justify their choice.

My answer to them is a high rpm launch, or, my favorite, a clutch kick on the skid pan.

On a side not:

How do the autos handle prolonged track?

How much to they cost to service and how often?

Finally, I assume there are more issues with manuals because, A- people are learning to drive, or B-track, smashing thru twistys/khana abuse

Less so for the autophiles hard parked at McDonalds or ""cruising"".

This post represents the official views of the voices in my head from so far working 14 days straight trying to teach muppets to operate plant equipment, only 10 more days to go, my mood should pick up and the voices should quite down then.

Apart from the loud one yelling, "autos in a 86 are for bisshhes"...

Load, action, instant...watch and shoot

It's all about timing for the slack.

The part that needs practice, especially when wringing it out, is giving enough time for the engine speed to drop before nudging it into gear.

I wouldn't recommend doing this with regularity unless you're a fucking pro at not grinding up blocking rings.

As ol @Ultramaroon confirms - it's all about timing.

I can do that consistently at "medium rpms" (like around 3,000).

The timing thing involves letting off the gas, listening to the engine, knowing when to pull it out of one gear and when (how soon) to slide it into the next gear.

Hell, if ol Ultramaroon and old humfrz can do it, anybody can do it -

I don’t consider it so bad that the car is joyless to drive.

Now the rattle in the back. That shit bugs me.

Try double clutching. It will slip right into any gear with zero resistance. Even 1st at 30mph is effortless.

When my TOB finally gave up for good I was ~180 miles from home and had to syncro shift the rest of the way home. I hadn't done this in a while so the first few were 'rough' but I got the mojo back pretty quickly and actually enjoyed it after that. It did kinda suck getting stuck at traffic lights though. In the old cars I used to be able to turn them off then put it into 1st and start it moving by using the starter but now you have to put the clutch in or they don't start so that option was off the table.

OK, another member, ol gravitylover to add to the club -

Oh, ya, folks with the old cars DO NOT put them in first then try to start them - I damn near ran over myself doing that -

I've had to do this several times on other cars. I had a starter cut but I would simply press the clutch (even though it wouldn't do anything) and then turn the key to pull/start the car while the pedal was pressed. Once it was started I would release the pedal.
