@runfrodorun What a painful thread to read. I will tell you what: I will fly up to Chicago and you can sign the title over to me and give me a bill of sale for the car. That way you will never have to look at it in your driveway again. It sounds like it would be a great deal for you so that you can get a grip and restore your sanity. I promise that I will never complain to you if a gear does grind and I certainly will not show up at your house to kill you if it happens.

But what if it doesn't happen?

My own 2nd gear grinds pretty bad while my trans is cold. Went all summer without an issue but on a few cool mornings now, it's come back. When really cold, it can feel like it doesn't want to even go in the 2nd gear gate without significant force so when it's that cold, I just skip 2nd and go straight into 3rd, rather than force it. For me, it's just part of life with this transmission. Doesn't happen once it's had a chance to warm up.

I'm not really sure why people would have a problem with 2nd but not 3rd. 1, 2 and 3 are all triple cone. 4, 5 and 6 are single. Reverse even has a synchro on this car which explains why I never have to play games getting this tranny in reverse. My only guess is people abuse 2nd more than 3rd.

Tolerances are super tight on the second gear, feels great when hot or at high rpm, difficult in the cold and slow rpm.

Since I never drive it in the cold worst case I get is resistance on the first shift to 2nd but it's warm enough by the time I need 2nd again it's fine. Your weather is warmer than mine.

Wait. Chicago? I'd be curious to test it.

I think I need to adjust the reverse lockout plate on mine as it's a little finicky doing fast shifts to second. Previous BRZ was fine, but i never got around to installing the short shifter before it got crunched.

I am much more curious to know what everybody is referring to as a "grind". I tried making mine grind and the only way I could do it was by not having the clutch in all the way. The little stiffness I feel when really cold is so far from a grind that it is hard to understand that it does it for others.

hmmm - interesting theory - maybe too many F&F shifts from 1>2 -

DAMD! The mini van moved at the light - dump the clutch - oopps hit red line, fuel cut off - must shift into 2nd while fuel is shut off - shit! - mini van jumped a fender length on me -

Fucking transmission cost me THAT race -

An Asian girl in San Jose? That is a bit far fetched.

I'm thinking that maybe several of our members are too young to remember, back-in-the-day, with a car with three on the tree shifter and you were trying to teach your GF or younger sister how to drive a stick. GRIND was the sound made when they shifted from first to second gear - and forgot about the step where they were to push in on the clutch -
