It had served it's purpose in eliminating all the crappy pre emission controlled vehicles from the road anyway. The very small handful of newer cars that will go catless or older cars that actually needed testing will have no real effect on air quality.

Just because you don't need a test every two years doesn't mean you can legally do anything more. If you're stopped and they find you've removed emissions equipment you'll still get a brutal fine and likely have your plates pulled. If anything it's more risky now since they'll be looking closer at modified cars.

With the ODB test you could be catless and beat it with software.

Guys, while I am happy with this program being scrapped (especially when the government decided to make it 'free' instead of improving it to actually target polluters), I do not condone people making silly exhaust mods for street driven cars. Catalysts are there for a reason and I like breathing clean air.

If you go catless, do it at the track and come race us

I always wondered why they were more focused on emissions testing for a normal passenger car, than the rusted, beat up garbage truck fleet. I see more garbage trucks and state plow trucks rolling coal than any amount of Confederate flag wearing, lifted Chevy trucks. But as we all know, as they crunch down on corporate to fix and replace to meet regulations, we're going to get charged more for whatever.

I will agree that if most people were catless, there's no way you could leave your window rolled down in traffic

Oh I know. I was merely joking about the catless comment. I intend to run at least one hfc in the front pipe. Drive clean was a joke. My previous car failed due to a CEL, caused by a leak in one of the lines running to the evap/charcoal canister. This car had no modifications. I had to jump through hoops to get a conditional pass. Meanwhile a buddy in his Kswapped civic was running full catless, smelt like shit and blowing black smoke passed with flying colours.

The program was even more intolerable when it cost money.

You do you, but removing the primary cat leaves you open for a pretty huge fine if you're caught. IIRC it's north of $5k.

I'd rather see safety checks every now and then.
Some of the stuff I've seen on lifts and driving around is terrifying.

"Oh my brakes just started making noise..."

Blackened

Park your white vehicle under a runway flight path (Pearson in my case) and you'll soon know which means of transportation desperately needs a clean-up.
Black soot galore!

Cuz potential generated revenue is much higher due to more normal passenger cars than the heavy commercial vehicles.

The garbage truck fleet around the GTA actually isn't as bad as before and the public buses here are now mostly hybrid electric.
