I have been driving MT for a months and I haven't seen tach that much except in few cases where shifting from 1st to 2nd was dipping so fast almost under 500 rpm even though I changed gear at 3,500 RPM. I may be releasing the clutch slowly or slow shifting something wrong.

Yeah that's really slow shifting. You should be letting the rpm fall to the speed it will start the next gear; i.e. from 3000 to about 2200. By 2200 you should already be slipping the clutch and getting back onto throttle.

Average gas mileage showed today: 30 mpg. Is this good or should go up?

30 is good. If I drive "nicely" and it's mostly highway miles I have seen as high as 32.5. It's more frequently 24-28.

Learning manual, stalled so many times
I get 28 (indicated on the display) on 93 and 21 on E85 (calculated on actual miles driven between fill ups). Lots of stop and go.
I would say your mileage will go down as you get more confident driving the car and start driving it harder. |

Fyi you can mess around with your tune there's a fuel multiplier table you can offset by 25-30 percent so you can use the cars mpg calculator for e85. It's called Fuel Multiplier display offset and it's either under BRZ ALPHA or CLUSTER in the definitions.

Yeah I read about that but wanted to get some manual calculations before playing with those values so I had a better idea what multiplier to use to get accurate numbers. Its been fairly consistent at 21mpg after about 10 tanks of E85 so I think Im ready to play with the display. I know the display is a little off when I run 93 too so at some point I want to calibrate the display on my 93 tune also. |

I used a value steve99 posted awhile back for both 93 and e85 to correct them, and it no longer goes to the ridiculous 127 signed integer value when your off throttle My E85 is 20 mpg and my 93 octane is around 24.6

This is a pretty hard car to drive IMO
-Clutch pedal is really soft, makes it harder to know exactly where you are -Clutch bite engagement is too high. The clutch starts engaging at the halfway mark to creep slowly, but the point where the clutch needs to be to actually take off is nearly at 9/10 of the way up. Any less and it will be too slow, any higher and you end up fully engaging the clutch. -Throttle lag and DBW system makes it harder to do a "see saw" between the gas and clutch in comparison to a traditional throttle cable. The DBW delay has to be accounted for. And depending on humidity and air temp the throttle is very inconsistent, some days the weight of my foot resting will result in the engine shooting up to 3k RPM, some days it will be 1.5k RPM. Makes taking off very inconsistent until I get used to the throttle "mood" of the day. Overall my only advice is to sit the same way and wear the same shoes and even socks if you want to get the perfect smoothless shifts... |

To add to the good points already mentioned, I think posture/flexibility for some plays a part in bad shifting. I suffered from it for the longest time, due to poor health and numerous ankle injuries to both ankles over the years, which I neglected. That's vital to being able to modulating the pedals smoothly.
Ever since I went back to the gym, and took physio to bring back strength and flexibility in my ankles and knees my shifting consistency returned immediately. |
