So, "let's not get into it", and just go with your definition?

Nah, let's get into it!

I like Camaros, I owned a Camaro. A Camaro is emphatically NOT a sports car. Too big, too heavy.

"Excellent power" is NOT a requisite feature for a sports car. Most of the sports cars that best define and represent the genre (to me!) have not had a lot of power. Sprites and Midgets, Miatas and Elises, these are sports cars. Muscle-bound 2-door sedans? Not to me...
Even a Corvette is *to me* more of an uberperforming supercar than a pure, minimalist, lightweight sports car.

But whatevs, to each his own. I'm sure many Mustang/Camaro and even Challenger owners like to think they have a sports car, so why not let them...

You didn't dig far. I'm still lurking over there and it gets brought up all the time. So do other comparable cars.

The forum IS more then just wash and wax, gold chain recommendations, and GS stripe supplier threads.

Thanks for your definition. Unfortunately convention provides substance to the definitions we give words. Argue until you are blue in the face if you want about historical usages of the word and about the evolution of cars (it has been argued here at nauseum many times), and it means nothing about what the word means to the masses now or what it will mean tomorrow. I was just trying to quell the storm, but I’m game if we want to talk nonsense for a bit.

Excellent wasn’t a description of absolute power or a description of a degree of necessary performance. The Miata, for instance, has far less power than many cars, but few would argue that it is not well equipped for $25k; it is realitive. The power it has for the weight it has for the price it is at is good compared to other subcompacts. Many cars have less power with significantly more weight.

Power isn’t a requirement, but it is a factor, along with handling, grip, stopping ability, etc. Think of each aspect as abilities a superhero has. Some superheroes are strong. Some are fast. Some have better agility. Some have multiple abilities, but maybe the one ability another hero has can overpower the other abilities the opposing hero has. There is a specrum of attributes, but they are all superheroes. You, like others before you, seem to want to describe attributes that are necessary for a superhero to be a superhero, limiting the circle of inclusion; eg, Ironman and Batman aren’t superheroes because they lack natural abilities. The Challenger Demon may not be able to go around Laguna Seca faster than a Honda Civic Type R, but it will beat a Bugatti Veyron SS in a quarter mile race. That is enough to call it a sports car for most people.

Sports cars do well in motorsports—not all motorsport events. Production sports cars are all said vehicles that could do well, which is on a spectrum that depends on relative factors, and yea, there is a grey zone where things are harder to define, so what?

There is a difference between "sporty" cars and a sports car. A lot of people consider the new breed of SUVs and crossovers as sporty cars or even sports cars. I don't.

On topic: I like the looks of the new mid-engine Vette much better that the new NSX or the Lambos that some people are comparing it to.

Did you own an Alpha Camaro though? I'm not talking about past Camaros, I'm talking about the current Camaro being made right now.

The Camaro is RWD, 2 doors, focuses on driver involvement, and handles better than cars twice its price. It's not very lightweight, but that's about it.

Of course language evolves and so do the meanings of words. But there is and should be a distinction between what are FAST cars and what are SPORTS cars. If any fast car is a sports car, we don't need the term at all.

Regarding what the term means now, Wikipedia seems like a reasonable place to go.

A car may be a sporting automobile without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, pony cars and hot hatches, generally are not considered sports cars, yet share traits common to sports cars.
