Had a nice 73 year old guy come up to me and chat after I parked at Alice's Restaurant this morning.

He was telling me how he had originally really wanted a BRZ but his son persuaded him to get a Miata instead. We had a good conversation for several minutes about how well the car handles and how it's a great car for 30k.

Usually seems like it's the older people who understand our cars' purpose better.

It usually goes something like this...

"Hey is that new?"

"No, I got it six years ago."

"Really? What is it?"

"It's a Scion FR-S, kinda like a Subaru BRZ."

"Isn't scion dead?" "How fast is it?"

"Yes" "Not very."

"Oh... Well it looks cool."

"Thanks."

Or

"Cool wheels, you Turbo it? My buddy's BRZ has a turbo. He's got like 500hp, He can smoke skylines and supras"

"Thats nice. Yeah, my engine is stock."

"You should turbo it. The stock engine is weeeeeak!!!!"

Guy stops talking and walks away.

Funnily enough I thought I was finally almost better yesterday, but this morning the coughing got worse again and more sore throat problems started. I took the plunge on a drive anyway though because I hated being stuck at home all week.

"What do people say about my car"

Negative: don't like the color, it's slow, it's small, it's slow, useless back seat, it's slow, it's a girls car, it's slow, it's hard to get in and out of, it's slow, it's not practical, it's slow = I don't care.

Positive: It looks good, it handles good = I still don't care

Me: I like it, lightish, RWD, manual and cheap, plus, with some tyres and suspension the thing can be thrown around like a go kart, and like a cart you need to work to keep up the pace, there isn't alot of power to make up for poor driving skills, being fast is a "slow" car is much more gratifying than just being fast because you have power to make up for lack of skill.

Disclaimer: a well build 86 running 350hp would be sweet though.

I just need to find 20k under the sofa.

That reminds me my conversation with the local Subaru dealer when I was having transmission problems.

"Do you drift the car?"
"No."
...pause...
"Yeah ya do."
"No, I don't."
"Yeah ya do."
"NO, I DON'T."
"Yeah, I think you do."

Damn! I'd be pissed if a dealer bantered me like that. What was the outcome??

Some guy working at Costco: "Hey is that your BRZ out there?

Me: Yep.

Looks like you have a lot of work done to it

It's just a stock tS.

Oh. Have you turbo'd it yet? They don't make enough power stock

Nope. Stock power is just fine for the track and canyons in my opinion.

Dude, you really need to turbo it or else the car is worthless. My S13 with an SR swap could destroy your car

I've also got an S13 with an SR swap.

Cool! I want to swap out the SR though because it's so unreliable. I'd show you mine, but I can't because it's down due to engine problems

Really? I've never had a single problem with mine.

Oh yeah, how much boost are you running

*Makes direct eye contact* "Stock."

Yeah, I was pissed. That was the end of that conversation. He insisted my driving was the problem, not the tranny. His dealership replaced a bunch of parts, but not the tranny, even though it was obviously not a problem with the parts they replaced (i.e. driveshaft, etc.). The problem still persisted. After I told him their work didn't resolve the issue he had egg on his face and they wouldn't get the job done. I had to go to another dealer, who called in the field engineer. He said it needed a new tranny. They replaced it. Problem solved.
