Except many of them were gaskets. I unsuccessfully slopped on a lot of goop before learning to properly clean the mating surfaces. Then, years later in college, I learned a little about how adhesives work the way they do.

Well, ya, we did learn that you just can't clean up the part with a rusty putty knife and wore out wire brush, and expect the new gasket to always seal it, regardless of how much old, half dried up, form-a-gasket you used.

Especially working in an old, dark, drafty, cold barn, with a dirt floor, with a coal oil lamp for light.

We had a skinny little wire running from the house to the workshop to the barn.

I've struggled through this entire thread, wondering if I made a wise choice by buying a 2014 with 30,000 miles on it. I don't know if there are any stats anywhere showing a percentage of these cars with spun bearings. I know if I had any thoughts about FI before, I don't now. I also have to rethink my oil philosophy. I put Mobil-1 0W30 in it right after I got it. But that's primarily because it gets so hot in Florida. I usually change oil in my cars at 5000 miles. Maybe I'll shorten that up a bit. My first planned addition was oil temp and pressure gauges. I'm raising that to critical status.

It's all in the prep work.

DANG, Qwimby1 , I'm ah feared you are over worrying about your car to the point where you may not be enjoying driving it

Then, I'll betcha if you do get oil temperature and pressure gauges, they will just give you more numbers to fret over.

No, I suspect the overall percentage of spun bearings is quite low, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on that in this thread. Admittedly the subject here has been more about the possible cause, rather than frequency. I'll take the car to the track a few days a year and use it as my DD, which means it will get pretty well thrashed every day.

I'm coming off 180,000 miles on a pair of Miatas over a 14-year period with no internal engine problems. Maybe I just got spoiled.

Well, yes, I hear that. For 88,000 miles, I had no hesitation in taking my NC miata anywhere with no worries. However, with my FR-S, I would think about it. Why is that, my FR-S hasn't given me any reason to doubt its reliability, after 20 some thousand miles -

Ya know, with over 80,000 miles on the car and your car's history, I have a feeling that you best sell (trade in) that car and get another (maybe new) one.

humfrz
"trade in"

Better grab hold of your ankles if you are going to ask the dealer for the trade in value without seeing what others will give you. Your best bet is to go to carmax (if you have one by you), get a quote (it's good for a week) on what they'll buy it from you. Then go to the dealer and see what they will negotiate for the car price first, tell them you might be trading in the car. Keep in mind that they will know all the issues with the car and see where you come out ahead.
