LOL yeah I've heard of those things, Matt Sarah of Smoking Tire has one. He even went on in an episode with Joe Rogan on why those things are an absolute blast to drive. I think he called them 911 Safary build.

I've had the FRS and CX-5 combo since 2013 (now a brz and CX-5 combo). I always felt that the CX-5 is the CUV version of our cars.

If I could afford 2 air cooled 911's the second one would undoubtedly be a safari build.

But that's like saying 'if I won the lottery'

Although I think I might take a gamble on a 1st gen Boxster if my FR-S ever bit the dust, I'd probably have it for less than a year before getting back into an FR-S though...

Yes you will definitely have it for less than a year before you go back into an FR-S.

Just as soon as something breaks (which is a given that it will) and you're told your beloved Porsche will be parked for a few weeks until the necessary parts come from Germany after you finish fighting with the local dealer to get them and you will be charged 700$ for a hose and another 700$ to install it.

Meanwhile, the only thought that will be running in your mind when you're behind the wheel is: "Will I get home today without needing a flatbed?"

I do my own work, my FRS has only been touched by tire mounters and alignment techs. While I don't doubt parts will be a wait by the mailbox ordeal, it's already like that with my FRS as local dealers overcharge for parts.

You're right I'll be back in an 86 or something similar, but mostly due to the lack of LSD and camber of a stock boxster.

^^Not really sure why you're exaggerating Porsche maintenance. It's nothing like what you've stated.

I guess my experience was very bad relative to others.

Now just discussing this topic brings back bad memories I'd rather forgot.

Maybe if people weren't spoiled by amazing tires and electronic nannies they would know how to actually drive their car and correctly react during emergency situations.

Have you seen how many people are afraid to turn off the aids *with this platform*?

Idk why though. If there's any sporty car it's "safe" to do so on, the twins are it. At least in the RWD category, and nobody really wants nannies off on anything FWD lol.

All good cars deserve to be driven at 10/10ths regardless of drivetrain layout.

Fair enough, it was a very train-ist comment and I am ashamed. I guess the most fun bit of my Hyundai Accent is that it doesn't have TCS, ESC, or ABS which makes it both terrifying and hilariously fun in the snow. Can we add that to the ...vs... topic?

Both cars are meant to be pocket rockets and both cars ended up being largely misunderstood by the general public due to lack of power (which is really not even needed for public roads in my personal opinion). It's a fantastic car which gave me many fond memories which I'm sure the BRZ will do the same, it already is in the short period I've had it..
Out of curiosity, was your Celica a GTS?
I had a beatdown 5MT GT (3rd-hand car I bought for $3k) and loved that thing - the suspension was shot, but I preferred the sound (even for the crappy 1ZZ) vs the FA20's stock sounds, and the clutch felt easier to modulate (albeit higher effort) than the BRZ. Plus I managed to get 700km per tank routinely, which was nice.

I got the same feeling when I testdrove a 2016 WRX as a potential replacement for the BRZ at the end of my lease, and it left me cold.
Cold enough that I just got a base CVT Impreza to share with my wife until I could find a car I truly enjoyed.

Mine was a GT as well

I wanted to get the GTS but they were all riced up like heck and beat on very badly. It seems easy to find a clean GT but not a clean GTS.

And yes I totally agree, I prefer the sound over the stock FA20. I personally really loved the sound the Celica made especially when you get off throttle. The FA20 stock isn't bad it just sounds more on the formal polite side whereas the Celica sounded more raw.

It's very sad that Subaru decided to do this to the BRZ FA20 exhaust sound. They could've easily made it sound fantastic like using UEL headers and a more growly sound especially when you get off the gas pedal but oh well.

For the record I was following the FT86 development in the early stages and they were considering calling it a Celica at one point. Just goes to show you how closely related these two cars. They do follow the same concept of simple small practical sports car that focuses on fun. This category is now practically dead.

First time I testdrove a GTS (working summer at a Toyota dealership), I burned the clutch bad.... The poor thing.... Even considered a XRS Matrix to get the 2zz at one pooint.

When I first took my BRZ home, I thought something was wrong - it sounded like a dump truck (living in a condo, all sounds get amplified, especially the not-so-nice ones). The humble inline 4 in the GT sounded like music to me.
I did wish the BRZ/FRS was a hatch though - but I'm so glad I ended up in the BRZ instead of the Genesis Coupe I had originally been planning on.
