I'm easy on brakes but I've been through seven sets of tires and am about 4k away from set number 8.

Watch for saturated Houston or Baltimore flood cars.

You know they're around.

Disagree with your estimate that 80% are modded or beat up. Probably more like 40%. We just don't hear or see the majority that are running around bone stock driven by somebody that will never see red line much less slide it out (on purpose). I doubt even 80% of the ones on this forum are heavily modded or beat on.
Do you have a source like a dealer statistic that shows how many cars come in that are modified? If not your guess is just as good as mine. I seriously doubt that only 40% of us drive the car like Ms Daisy is a passenger or don't do any modifications whatsoever. The car is underpowered in the lower rpm band compared to other cars and it needs to have the pedal to the metal just to feel normal. During the recommended brake in, it was really painful to drive it like I was carrying nitroglycerin bottles.

In my personal opinion, the modding and trashing of the car is what kept me away from the used market.

Nope but I still say 80% is way way too high.
the 40% was the heavy modified and abused category. Even many of the modified are not abused in any way. Many are even babied.
Needs to have the pedal to the metal to feel "normal"? Please define "normal". I have never had this issue.

It runs great but does need some regular maintenance done, still gets 31-33mpg on the road though, and it needs new shoes. I expect that if I were to list it it would be for under 10 and I'd probably get offered 9.
If you turned it in to carmax, they would give you maybe 2000-4000. Once a car goes over their magical 100K miles, it's bought from you and resold at auction. My wife sold her lancer at 97K for $7000. I tried to sell my lancer with 125K miles and they offered 2k. It even had brand new wheels and tires costing $1500 at costco. I did sell the car to them but I put the steelies with the old tires back on for that $2k.

Normal is definitely not having your dentures in a half full glass in your cup holder, and not wanting to spill it. Not pushing the car above the torque dip would put you in the same territory has a cheap sub compact. People buy the car because of the lotus car handling. They're going to drive it like it's stolen. I'm sure there's the exception to the rule (maybe you?) but this is not one of those cars that is parked in a nice garage and not driven.

What's your definition of abused?

There are many people that do not hammer on them and they buy it for many reason not just the Lotus handling. The assumption that it is just bought by people that want to play racecar is simply not accurate. There is still some pretty decent torque below the "dip" so no need to drive around ball out all the time. In fact I am not sure where people daily drive it where that is even possible. The use of the word "abused" was yours.

One might even venture to say that enjoying the "Lotus" handling of the car does not require abusing the engine, drivetrain, brakes, body, or interior. I will say my tires are abused though...

You're right. The assumption that everyone here is representative of the average Twin buyer is far from true. The nuts that hammer their car tend to be on these "enthusiast's" site like this forum. The vast majority of owners just want to drive a really good handling car that's fun to drive. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of owners don't put on wide wheels/tires or FI and definitely don't lower their car. How do I know? Just get on Autotrader and look at the used BRZ's. Well over 90% are completely stock including wheels. And of the few that aren't, there are only a couple with wide wheels/tires. And most of the cars do not have extra high mileage.

I would say about 70% of the twins i see are stock with middle aged women in them, or young Asian females.

A lot get put back to stock for trade in since it is easier to recover costs but still the majority never get extensively modded in the first place. Lowering the car is one of the most common mods. Mine is lowered.

Guru is in SoCal so may have a distorted perspective on the average owner.

I don't know if "a lot" get put back to stock, but I agree that the majority never get extensively modded. Very few of the cars for sale were lowered. I doubt that most who have lowered their car put back the original springs, dampers, and readjust camber. I think lowering the car looks better, but for street driving, there is no real benefit and the ride comfort is reduced. My 18 has a much better ride than I experienced in a stock 16 and also a 17 I test drove. I would not lower a car just for looks, but if you like a stiffer ride, you may prefer it that way. However, the padding on my butt has reduced with age and I guess I just feel the jarring more than when I was young...... and I'm a weightlifter in fairly good shape for a septuagenarian.

It's really rare that I get much over 4k and highly unusual that the car goes over 5k. Even when I'm gettin' after it on back roads I'm usually running around 4k. It made a huge difference getting a stage 1 tune that almost completely eliminated the dip. That's the only mod I've done.
