It's something I've sort of subconsciously questioned for a while.

I never served so it's hard for me to really judge or properly consider it. But I tend to think of my grandfather who is way past 90 and served in WWII at 16 y/o after escaping the Holocaust in Germany, etc. etc.

He's still alive, but he had a hard life. Having to serve especially after such a traumatic childhood certainly took a toll, and it's much more noticeable now than when I knew him as a younger grandfather.

So I wonder.. he's not dead so I don't want to memorialize him that way. But do I want to memorialize what he was before, and the fact that the world forced him to take that path?

I feel that other service members (not necessarily most, even) have similar stories. So when I think about even the living vets, I wonder if we should recognize them beyond just Veteran's day, because to me Veteran's day tends to be more of a "thanks for your service, let's have a bbq and pool party".

Hope that makes sense.

Remember him as a young man that had the stamina and abilities to survive a world that killed many others.

Is there really a better way to celebrate those that survived? All military no matter what their job was served so that BBQs and pool parties could exist.

I'm always polite and appreciative when someone thanks me but, unless it comes from someone else who tasted the shit sandwich, I cringe on the inside. My closest family and friends know how much and why. It's nothing exciting but I came out the other side a pacifist.

Different military but I enlisted because I wanted to. I was a cadet at 13 years old and enlisted the day I turned 17. Life and circumstances in the Canadian military at that time forced me to leave. Twelve years later I went back for several more years as a Reservist and at one point even considered going back to regular force. I am still listed on the Supplemental Reserve and could be called for active service at any time there was a need. My age and rank at retirement would put me on training staff though so odds are they will never need me. If they do it means the shit has really hit the fan.

In lighter news, I'm taking a trip down the overclocking rabbit hole on my PC right now. I apparently lost the silicone lottery since I can't get my 4670k over 4.3 GHz, even with vcore at 2.6V.

Reading some of the OC forums for ideas has given me a new appreciation for this one lol.
