Really dumb shift knob question

The OEM knob I bought to replace the aftermarket one on the car when I bought it, doesn't want to line up the numbers properly. It needs about a third more clockwise turn, but that would take a LOT more force than I think is wise, even if there's any more turn left. The locknut above the reverse lockout doesn't seem to be accessable up in the knob shaft, if that's its purpose. It doesn't seem to affect reverse lockout travel. Perhaps there was a pair of locknuts originally, which should work. I could fiddle with some spacers, I suppose, but I suspect there's something here I'm missing.
