It's like taking your car to the body shop. First estimate sounds ok, then you find the hidden damage underneath.

Yep, I found out a similar situation with remodeling our baths. Sometimes I wished I'd just had "bath fitters" come in and just "cover up" the whole mess....

Btw, solid metal shift knobs and sunshine really don't mix. Practically burned my hand leaving work yesterday. Need to make a cover for when parked.

Yep, the secret is to know when to stop.

Stop cutting back dry rot ....... before you run into the foundation.

Stop cutting back the plumbing (to find non lead soldiered / corroded pipes) .... before you reach the water line in the street.

I do most of my own renovations. Usually get them about 98% finished. That way when the wife starts to say "we should..." I can just say. "Oh I have to finish that last project first".

So now I have about 12 projects that are 98% done but I may still win one once so I keep trying.

Can't un-see it, though.

Yep, my similar strategy with mrs humfrz is that when she suggests an "add on" to the remodel plan ...... I simply say we will do that during "phase II".

Guess what ....... phase 1 never really ends.

Hybrid shift knobs ftw. Raceseng makes a great line of them. I have a knit cover that I got at an auto show years ago, there are plenty of boots out there for purchase.

I'd hate to see the costs / issues if my parents ever decided to remodel their home.

When we moved in about 10 years ago the kitchen was "newly remodeled" and the long garage had been split in half, with one half being an office/"bonus" room and a full bathroom and the other half being the rest of the garage.

At the time I remember there were lots of small issues here and there with how things had been done at different points in time. Both during those remodels, and also when apparently the "third floor" master bedroom/bathroom was added. Even the floors in a couple rooms had to be redone because they weren't real hardwood floors or whatever.

Could go on and on. But I've learned so much for whenever I get a house in a few decades. Fucking ridiculous.

Well, I survived another trip to Walmart.

Yep, it was “old couples” day for sure. The old people were clogging the isles in the grocery section. The park their cart in the center of the isle and one is close up to the shelves and the other one is across the isle …… because one is near sighted and the other one is far sighted.

Once they are hovering in the general area of their purchase, the wife is shuffling through her coupons while the husband is comparing per unit prices. Then the arguments start. This one is a better deal …… but, we don’t have a coupon for that …… but that one isn’t a name brand …… who cares …….I do …… just because you don’t eat it. Fine, but it’s cheaper at Costco …… yes, but we don’t need 5 gallons of it.

Meanwhile, I’ve forgotten why I was in that isle and turn around and go down another isle …… then back down that isle from the other direction …… they are still there …… now they are comparing mg of sodium and grams of fat in items.

OK, I’m exhausted …….. it’s lunch time then nap time ……
