Different trans issue re:shifter centering

I've searched pretty extensively and have found all the normal trans issues, change the fluid, change the centering springs posts and haven't found anything related to my current issue. This is my second FRS and the first (used with 4500 miles on it) was stock and I did a trans fluid change and it improved shift performance significantly and shifted very well.
I recently picked up another with 24000 miles and it shifts horribly. It hangs between gears and won't go into the next gear sometimes. The shifter doesn't spring back to center consistently. I did a fluid change which improved smoothness but did not solve the centering issue. I installed Mtec centering springs and saw little improvement, I even changed the shifter (an IRP which I love) but it still doesn't center consistently.
Has anyone experienced this condition?

Sounds like the PO bent something in the rear housing. Did you buy it sight un... driven?
