The secret is to not make it sound like you are making fun of the language though. This can be hard for some Americans with accents (not joking). Even though they are trying it comes across as ridicule and that will not go well.

My reading and writing skills have survived OK but my speaking of French now sucks. I get pity English on a fairly regular basis.

reading and I'm pretty good. it's just harder to understand when people speak fast and have their own accents and local flavor of speech. I'm usually able to pick up enough words to figure out what they're talking about without really understanding it all or at least get close. this killed me in my final year of German in college. all my teachers had been from northern Germany. then I get this southern broad and my entire calls was like "WTF did you just say?".
