Sometimes brake pads can be "fine" when be measured for thickness, but squeal when applied, due to various conditions, like glazing.

Reminds me of back in the 60s, when I was following a VW hippie bus along Route 1 near Big Sur, CA.

The dudes brakes had gone out and he was dragging his foot trying to get his van stopped. Since I was in my MGB, I was not about to play hero and try to get in front of him and try to slow him down.

FINALLY ...... the dude decided to bring his vehicle to a stop, by grinding it into the side of a cliff. ......

Taking your foot off the gas is also "engine braking". Fairly sure your car will survive.

I do. I was taught to always drive the car. Coasting isn't driving.

Yep, I'm afraid I downshift too when slowing down/stopping.

Why?

Maybe it's a holdover habit from my truck driving days?

Maybe it's a holdover from my mechanical brake/single cylinder hydraulic brake days? (yep, if you have ever mashed on the brake pedal and had it go all the way to the floor ..... you would know that it's not the time to start rev matching to find a lower gear ......

Maybe I just like to hear the exhaust .....

Well, maybe you're right ..... the less some folks shift their transmissions, the better off their car will be. It's really hard to fuck up a car by applying the brakes ......

you need a driver's mod..

engine braking properly is totally fine. if you aren't revv matching, forcing the stick into gear, burning your clutch or worse yet perform a money shift, then you need more manual practice..it has nothing to do with engine braking being "bad" for the car....your original post in this thread is just an opinion, not fact
