Cadillac announces re-designed CT6 with 550 hp, 627 lb. ft. DOHC V8 in a hot V setup
Good God. The current CT6 is already lighter than the 5-series and is fantastic to drive. This thing is going to be a monster. If I was in the market for an executive autobahn stormer, I would take this over anything from the Germans.

Nice! If this pans out like it appears to be, it might bump the CTS-V off my next car list. Looks like a de-tuned version of the engine will be available in other models as well.
Cadillac is really stepping up their game.

So I’m not up on my Cadillacs, did they use superchared v8’s before, a la LS/LT variants? Where is this DOHC V8 motor stem from?

Yessir. I've been following commentary on this and I'm surprised people are underwhelmed by this engine. It's going to hit like a sledgehammer and not relent until redline. On paper, it looks fantastic.

It's a new V8. Before, they used a supercharged LT1 (aka Corvette Z06 engine). They are emphasizing area under the curve over raw horsepower for this engine.

They are saying the engine will be exclusive to Cadillac. Makes me wonder if the mid-engine might have a Caddy badge.

Badass engine, and I'm happy to see GM investing into powertrains of this time.
However I'm bummed that it's a hot V configuration.

Not disagreeing but would be interested in why you think so. I'm not that familiar with a Hot-V setup.

First, from packaging point of view, it's very tall. And while turbos/piping doesn't weigh all that much comparatively, it does move COG upwards. Also, the rest of the structure needs to be tall to accommodate it's height. Less of a concern for mid-engined cars than front, but still important. Then performance. Peak power at 5.7k and peak torque at 3.5k means that it isn't rewarding to rev it out, which seems to be something the majority of sports car enthusiasts like. Seemingly effortless acceleration and speed can be rewarding by itself, but doesn't suit a sports car. Something else to consider is turbos and exhaust piping gets hot. And you are putting all that radiant heat as close as possible to your combustion chamber with nowhere to go. It's great for a couple of pulls from a highway roll, but I would think you would run into heat soak problems if you ran it hard all day. |
