Shopping list for installing DDX917WS in 2017 BRZ

I'm trying to get a shopping list together for adapters needed for installing this head unit in my BRZ, but cant seems to get a solid answer on exactly what to get anywhere. I know I need a camera adapter, USB adapter, and antenna adapter. I just cant figure out exactly which ones to buy.

Would the parts in this post work with my BRZ or do I need to find Subaru specific parts.

P.S. I already have the Canadian face plate to get rid of the trapezoidal shape of the opening.

I didn't have an OEM backup camera to deal with for my BRZ but these were a couple things I got off Amazon for when I installed this head unit:

USB Retention: AX-TOYUSB
Antenna: Metra 40-LX11

Out of the box the head unit has most of the wiring harness handled (10, 6 and 28 pin plugs) for what you need.

Park Brake: You will have to find a 16 pin plug or splice for the factory parking brake if you care to have it work as intended. I just put my park brake wire from the head unit to ground and didn't worry about the 16 pin plug at all.

Backup camera is what is the most confusing to me. I cant tell whether I need anything other than the AX-CAM6V for the backup camera.

Also I think I need an AX-SUBUSB2 for the USB instead of the AX-TOYUSB for my 2017.

On the BRZ the backup cam, AUX, Reverse signal and speed are on the 28-pin connector. So you gonna need AXSUB28SWC6V It comes with the 12V-6V converter.

So all I need is that adapter, the AX-SUBUSB2 for the usb, and the 40-LX11 for the antenna and I’ll be all set?

Yes. But you will need to de-pin the harness and re-arrange the wires. OR, do like I did.. The 917WS/918WS comes with a 28-pin connector for the SWC controls. I de-pined The AXSUB28SWC6V and transfer the needed wires to the connector that came with the 917WS.

That sounds like what I'll do. Does the BRZ doing send the steering info to the backup camera? One the the biggest annoyances I have with the stock HU is that there are no steering lines when backing up. Just the distance indicators.

Unfortunately, no. Both the 917WS/918WS have backup grid lines that can be turned on/off. I have then off since the backup cam has then already. However, there are no steering/turning indicator lines.

Ok so I just got my radio in and am trying to plan for the harness coming in tomorrow. All I need to do with the antenna adapter is out the blue wire into the 8 pin on the ddx917’s 10 pin connector right?

Then for the axsub28 I need to transfer all the wires to the ddx917’s 28 pin harness and then connect them to where they belong on the ddx917s main harness?

Any chance you have a picture of your completed harness?

Have you checked carbon systems harness for the ddx917ws? maybe they have the instructions how to wire it?

I am sure you are aware of the ready to use harness they provide. Just wanted to mention.

Thanks

Transfer the wires you need. At least thats what i did. Unfurtunately i did not snap a pic of the finish harness. Another thing you mig want to considered getting is this TESA Much better than regular electrical tape and will make the harness look factory made.

This is good option. It will $218 AUD(177 USD) shipped. I had originally purchased this from them but after reading others post on how to wire it I cancel the order and ordered the parts needed from Amazon. Ended up paying $60 instead. The Post listed earlier should be dead on for those with a BRZ. I had to deviate from it because I Have an 86

$60 is great! were you able to wire all features such as the steering wheel controls etc?

I will get the 2018 86 gt and did my search for ddx917. since we have the ddx918 now, I will have to wait for Carbon systems to release a plug and play harness. It will be though for me to wire the HU with all features working properly on my own
