If you don't want to get rid of the car, if they total it you should be able to buy it back from them for less $$$. Should end up being cheaper in the end if you do intend to keep the car for life, just my $0.02.

That being said I'd totally take this as an excuse to upgrade to a MT. But I am biased

Good point. I'm not 100% sure, just something I heard other people commenting how they bought their cars back from insurance.

Nice! If have expected frame damage on the driver's side, though minor. It looked like a bit of a pinch. Good to hear that's not the case and my guess was a little on the high side.

Not within the write off threshold. Pushing for total loss would be futile.

Of course it won't be exactly the same.

That doesn't mean that after it's repaired, he won't be able to enjoy driving it as much......

I've never been able to enjoy the same love affair with a vehicle after a repair like that, than before. I just stop caring. I don't wash it as much. I don't care about where I park it or door dings. It's just lost.
It's probably just me though.

They didn't total it at a near 14k repair estimate! I know it's not within the percentage but, damn. Unfortunately you wont know the total amount until they start the repairs, but hidden / additional damage is pretty common. Sorry to hear that
