LOL, ridiculous.

And yet, if you hang around Cayman owners long enough, and spend time on the Porsche forums, you'll see that the gear ratio thing comes up a lot. Gee, who would have thought?

Ok!

Next time that you buy a car don't look the engine specs, but look the gear ratios. Lol. Ridiculous posts and ridiculous forum. I am very sad of how things evolved over here.

Bwahahahaha. That’s such nonsense.
Manuals are a massive part of all sales here. I know the US is a big market, but this comments is bollocks.

Yeah, except not really. It's not a secret either.

BMW insiders, however, have previously indicated that the decision to engineer the outgoing F10-generation BMW M5 with a manual transmission for North America won’t be repeated with the new car.

That doesn't mean that they spearheaded anything simply that they were sending them. The efforts of a 2% segment of the American car buyers that lobby for MT does not influence world wide MT sales.

You need to look at several thing not just engine specs or ratios. They all are part of a whole not individual considerations.

I'm not implying that they do. But I'm saying it's a bigger impact than they're given credit for.

More M5 stuff:

Quote:
The E60 M5 was introduced in 2005, with an uneven firing V10 engine and 7 speed sequential manual gearbox linking the car with the BMW Sauber Formula One program.[26] The E60 M5 was the world's first production sedan to feature a V10 petrol engine. A 7 speed sequential manual gearbox (SMG III) was available, and a six-speed manual transmission gearbox was available for the US only. As with some of its predecessors, the E60 variant of the M5 was both the quickest and fastest 4-door sedan in the world at the time of its releas
Again, the US enthusiasts complained about it enough to make it happen. Though sadly I've heard in this case it was a halfassed mating of gearbox and engine.

And yet they still dropped in for the next gen so the very vocal yet very small minority that wanted it probably didn't put their money where their mouth was and actually buy them.

My favorite crash test for when people try to say the old cars were safer because they were bigger. The perfect example of what nostalgia can do to people perceptions.

Another favorite is the one Fifth Gear did of the offset frontal between a late 90's (I think) Volvo 9 series estate, and a newer, but comparitively microscopic Renault Modus. The Renault pulverized the bigger, heavier, 'safer' Volvo.
