In this case what you end up with is basically the equivalent of a shredded baked potato. It's better then it sounds, particularly with the eggs over medium put on top of it.

The sad thing is how right you are, and the fact that where I went the dorm food was basically all you could eat since it was paid by the semester, not by the meal.

So what happens when you mix college students being obsessed with "free" food? Well, lots of overeating of crappy food. At the time it's all good because "omg i can eat as much as i want more than 3x a day" and then when you finally move out you realize what a mistake it all was.

Well, if it doesn't meet your tastebuds there are lots of other options. My sons highly recommend the "All Star" but I can't eat that much these days without gaining 20 lbs. I do like the Fiesta or cheese-steak omelette as well.

Being a California boy, I have never had grits. I need to try them, but I don't even know a place that serves them. I wouldn't know a good grit from a bad grit.

There's a place in downtown SF if you're ever near AT&T Park that makes them.

I haven't had any before outside California, so I can't say they're good, but as someone without a point of reference they're quite tasty.

Grits are like the Southern version of tofu, they don't have much taste in and of themselves, but are a great vessel for something else.

They are a great excuse to eat butter or cheese, and there is a whole culinary art around "grits and ...." Grits and Shrimp are a big one.

Personally I prefer them with just a little butter, or some jack cheese melted into them. They are also good with a couple of "runny" egg yolk tossed in.

Just yesterday I was watching a show on food network and they were showing a shrimp and grits plate. Sure looked tasty.
