Hey everyone, recently purchased a 2015 Scion FR-S with 56,5XX miles. Recently had an issue with RPMs dropping to 500 then shooting up to 1000 while idle, would keep doing that until I restarted the car, turned out to be the Trans control module needed to be reprogrammed. Toyota also replaced the Fuel Pump. Once I got it back and started driving around while parked or at red light I would hear these noises. I have been doing research and have heard a bunch of possible explanations to what is wrong (Vacuum Pump, Lifters, Oil Starvation by excessive sealant, Tensioner/Pulley, Rocker Arm, or Cylinder Heads). Was curious if anyone else had this problem and would be able to shed some light on the situation, the dealer wants me to bring it back monday, but they dont think anything is wrong. Not sure if it is the natural sounds of the boxer engine, but friends with the same car does not have this loud of an idle noise, video attached. Video was not meant for visual but sound, I was looking around at night.
(yes it's auto, sadly, commute to work and home is not manual friendly, plus i would only have 2 days to learn stick before monday lol, so hopefully in the future tho) ![]() ![]()

Hmm. That's pretty loud but then again, most of them are if you're poking the microphone at the loud parts. Do the noises sound abnormal from the cabin? Are they most audible when it's colder outside? If first answer is no and second is yes, then I think it's normal.

I will say from my 5 years of ownership, this engine makes all sorts of noises while cold, and it's normal. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

I say this because I recently also made a thread about weird noises. Mine basically goes from EL to UEL sound and starts to make a sound similar to if you roll your R above 3200 rpm. None of this happened before it turned cold. When the weather is warmer, it's less prominent. My two cents though. I think all the noises really depend on the ambient conditions and maybe the engine varying the timing according to temp. Maybe that's why when the car was indoors (I'm assuming) at the dealer, the noises weren't there.

I'm from Jersey also and I did notice mine became noticeably louder recently during this recent winter. I've had the car for 4 years and have 112k miles I'm thinking I might need a new alternator belt possibly not sure tho.

First FA20 I have owned is my 2017 Yellow have had it for 6K miles. It sounds just like that also. The knocking comes in and out at idle. I just assume it is the nature of the beast.

Most of what messes with people's heads is the change in sound as the car switch's back and forth between the port and direct injectors. Each system has a totally different sound and since most of us are not used to a duel fuel injection system those different sounds worry us. At this point in time I would be much more worried if my engine didn't make weird (to me) noises!

One of my very least favorite noises was the distinctive 'click TWANG' sound as the manual choke cable broke off yet again. Heard that noise more often then I would care to.
