If you really believe that the BRZ gives you the same quality features as a RF you are in for a rude surprise. The RF is a great little car so if that is what you want then go for it. You asked for our input and we gave it so not sure why the resistance.

Have you considered trying to find a clean pre-owned '15 BRZ series blue , or '16 Hyper blue limited edition (or a RS1 or RS2 FRS) ? A RS2 will easily be on par ( creature comforts) with a limited BRZ (or better). Not sure if any of those colors strike you as a "GO"? If it were my dollar, buying used, I'd hold out for one of those that's the cleanest in a 1-3 month window. What about going with an Auto... "they" say you're suppose to get 1-2 better mpg out of a auto. Technically auto trannys tend to sell for less money, over manual (on average).

If you move forward with the above, the BRZ's are manual only ( limited to about 500 units on the white series blue, 500u on the WRB series blue, and 500 Hyper Blue '16). The FRS RS1 and RS2 come in manual or auto ( possibly less manuals though vs. auto per each RS1 and RS2).

If buying used, especially at such low mileage, beware (or be aware) of mods made to the car. If it has no service records, just say no. Make sure to ask the dealer to check (if possible) for a flashed ECU. Ask how old the previous owner was, too.
My 13 FR-S was gently abused, as will my 86 have been if I sell it, and I would be willing to bet they are in better shape than some of those other used examples. 13, 14 and 15 model year low-mileage Twins were prime flat-bill 'tard cars. Stay away. |

I was debating new vs used before I bought a new 86 last year, guess I'll throw my
thoughts on it into the mix: Compare how long it will take to pay off the difference between new vs used and how long it will take you to put that many miles on the used car. At least in my area, a used FR-S or BRZ with under 50k on it was still a minimum of ~17k, vs a new one at ~25k. A used car with 30k on it has to me, 2-3 years of miles on it. Can 1 year of saving cover the difference between new and used? If so, buy new, because you're getting 1-2 'free' years of saving (since the used car would theoretically last 2-3 less years and thus need replaced sooner, and thus give you a new car payment sooner). It's not the initial price difference that really matters, it's how much the car will cost you overall, and that includes how long it will last before buying your next car. A used car has a theoretically shorter lifespan than a new one (well, excepting a 'used' car with like 5k on it, but at that point, may as well buy new). And that's all before considering the minor improvements in the 17s and 18s and actually having a chance to buy brand-new. As for Miata vs FR-S, I'd say buy the Miata if you don't mind the price difference, can live with a convertible all year long, or have another car. Miatas 'feel' faster and have a better interior, they're just less practical. Personally I don't like the RF, it looks good but the complicated folding roof just adds unnecessary weight. Had I the funds it would be cool to have one and have the roof welded in place and the folding stuff removed, though. |
