I bet the vast majority actually drive like that in reality. Even the guys that talk like they drive 9/10s all the time.

Agreed. If we want companies to continue to build cars like this for enthusiasts, enthusiasts need to buy them new whenever possible. Buying new encourages manufacturers to continue to look into R&D for these models, as well as create a replacement for them when the time comes.

However, enthusiasts tend not to buy new, somehow thinking they're beating the system by buying used. You know what happened last time enthusiasts stopped buying new sports cars? Manufacturers stopped making them, and that's why for much of the 2000's the sports car market dried up, and there were fewer and fewer sports cars to buy, and the ones that were available kept getting older and older.

Manufacturers are focusing on crossovers right now because the people who buy them often buy new. Toyota and Subaru went through a lot of effort to bring a car directly aimed at enthusiasts to the market, and one reason it starts at such a low price is that it was meant to be an alternative to buying something else used. I can't find the link right now, but Akio Toyoda said that the 86 needed to built because enthusiasts needed a new choice since their only options for something great handling and affordable was getting something used or buying a Miata.

For those saying the 86 twins are too expensive, the car starts at a much lower price than the new car average, and adjusted for inflation actually costs less than the original AE86.

If you're in the market and deciding between new and used, please get a new one and help keep the 86 going, while also enjoying all the little upgrades (like the reinforced unibody of the 2018) that get added to the car year after year.

I'm in the middle. Of the 5 cars in my current herd 2 were purchased new, 3 were purchased used.

Typically when I go looking for a "new to me" car, I decide what I want first regardless of whether it is used or new.

When I decided in 2012 on the FR-S you could only get it new, so that's what I bought. If I was buying today I'd buy used because there isn't enough difference between new and old (for me) to buy new.

Ironically when people stop buying cars new it actually kicks the crap out of the resale/trade in value. If the companies are offering sales for under MSRP then that means the price of the used ones drops as well since nobody is going to pay top dollar for a used car if they can get a new one for nearly the same amount. Yes this make the used prices look more inviting but it really is harming the chance of the car continuing. Every single person (including me) that likes to brag about getting the car for "invoice" or lower is actually contributing to the low value of the resale's. Sure once the production of new ones ends then you may see a gradual rise in value for the available used ones but until that point the cheap used market just feeds off the new until it kills it.
So many people like to point at the year over year sales and scream "look how fast it is dropping" but they don't look at the used market and say "Oh wow look at that increase". They are directly tied together and can not be viewed separately.

But that other 1/10 of the time makes it all worth while.

11/10s is where it's at.

I got a 2013 FRS. No mechanical problems of any kind so far. If I had the choice today, I'd still pick the FRS over the BRZ. Then again, I bought it new so I'm not sure where that puts my opinion in relevance to the question...

...

Maybe we need a drove my 2013 today, didn't break down thread...

A couple of years ago there was hardly a day that went by without somebody having an issue but they have pretty much dried up. That is why I figure that those that were going to already have and those that won't haven't. The odd early release issue may still pop up but much of what happens now would just be normal wear and tear that all cars accumulate over time.

Used is fine as long as it's stock. Make sure it hasn't been tuned. Don't take over someone else's project unless it's what you want.

Where i live in south Florida if you do find a used one that has not been modified it is rare. You wont find many people over 23-24 that drive this car. Its mostly driven by kids who's parents have money.

My 2¢ from someone who bought a brand new 86 last year:

• New cars are awesome!
•New car payments... not so awesome...
• Warranty is probably not a huge issue on this (remarkably reliable) car, but it did factor into my decision to buy new vs. used
•If you want to extensively mod the car, buy used. No point in nullifying said warranty

I shopped for about three months and only found one used '15 FR-S that I thought was worth looking at. For a vehicle that has remained basically the same since 2013, this '15 felt a lot looser and louder than a model two years newer. For me it just came down to reliability and warranty, since it is effectively my only vehicle. If this were not my DD, I'd absolutely buy used and mod the hell out of it.

(And FWIW, if I had to do it all over again I would've bought a BRZ MT with PP.)

I actually don't like the Performance Package wheels all that much, and after this first season with them they'll be relegated to winter use. I prefer the look of the standard wheels on the 17+ cars better.

This is one of the reasons I've never bought a used car. Especially with performance cars, it's a crap shoot on what you're going to get, and you really have to be diligent in making sure all the proper maintenance was done. I just don't have time to put into hunting down a cherry example, so I'll stick with buying new that way I know how the car gets treated (good or bad).

Yea, I mean if you want a new car get a new car. There's no replacement for knowing you are the only one responsible for screwing it up.
