I would never run a 0w20 oil on a forced induction car. This grade is just for better consumption and lowering car emissions.

The manual states 0W20 or 5W30 for hot condition or trackdays.

Since my oil cooler doesnt let oil above 110C on track I actuality switched back to 0W20 as my oil pressure was too high with 5W30.

Can oil pressure be too high? I run 5w30 synthetic since installing the kit and JR combo radiator/cooler and hood vents.

High oil pressure mean the oil is thick and possibly not flowing as much oil because the pressure relief is working and the pump is less efficient. Thick oil doesn't lubricate as well but has a stronger film strength which is what protects the big end bearings.

Its a balance: you need thick enough oil (and thus pressure at the pump outlet) to protect the big end shells and other places where the film is under heavy load, but you need to make sure the oil is thin enough to flow and lubricate moving parts.

Dont ask me what the right amount of thick and thin is but my thoughts were that if you dont have a cooler and oil gets very hot ~140C+ then you need a thicker oil than even a W30 to maintain viscosity but as I have an oil cooler that limits oil temp to 110C the film strength of 0W20 is still good.

Adrian has it right
basically you run as thin a grade as you can whilst maintaining decent film strength on the crank an cam bearings
the push these days is for 0W20 to help with fuel consumption but I wouldn't go any thinner than 5W30 most of the time

we used to run a 0W15 in the F1 engines but these didn't have to last that long (3000km)

Tha ks Matt. Sounds like my 5w-30 was a good choice. I like more than 3000km out of my engines... lol.

Well if you don't have an oil cooler like the cosworth Dev car then oil sits around 100C and can get up to 140C on track fairly quickly.

If you have a cooler even with a Tstat the trickle flow will likely pull oil temps dpwn the 80s which pushed oil pressure up a bar or so. And if the oil cooler limits max temp to 110C instead of 140C then that's about 3Bar!

So with no cooler I can see why a w30 or a w40 (what i used to run stock) would be required as pressure 0w20 is down to 3bar @ 7k when up at 140C.

In my case I found I was getting 7bar hot and higher when I was on the motorway and 85C oil temp. So I switched to a 0w20.

I did do some film strength sums a while back but w20 at 110C is better or similar to a w40 at 140C iirc.

I need an oil pressure guage i guess. I run 203-208°f in traffic and have not seen anything over 210°f yet. BUT, its not summer yet and it hasnt seen the track. I think summer in Atlanta, GA and trackdays will require the 5w30.

For those of you who got the SC installed by a shop, how much did they charge you for the installation and how many hours?

Thanks!

It varies by shop but, it took them about 9 hours and cost me about $1100. Then again they had never worked on a car like mine but the British guy that worked their was familiar with supercharged cars.

Fensport in the UK charge £50/hour (+tax) and charge 13hours to install the kit and fine tune the Cosworth maps with the help of Matt. So £650... shame tax is 20% here....
