I have the same story, except it involved roofing (my Father owned a roofing company) and it happened about twice a week. Eventually you just think its a normal thing to do. These days, my Father would be in jail for child abuse.

I chose 8 because its not nearly so complicated, easier for just about anyone to get. People can tell their thumbs apart, they're not even called fingers. At least in English. So you have 8 fingers and two thumbs. You could get 32 but my guess is that is again too confusing, so I settled for 24.

I still don't get it? How and why would you count to 32 or 24 in octal with 8 fingers and 2 thumbs?

The most efficient would of course be binary. We could count to 1023 with our two hands. I just tried. Now my fingers hurt.

Newsflash: My snow blower started with a bellow of blue smoke.
My driveway is clear, my impaired old neighbour's driveway is clear and all is relatively well in my little corner of the world.

Meanwhile, I've had a nap and something to eat besides black coffee, so my quite real mood has changed dramatically.
And so has the landscape outside. It has snowed so much I'll have to go out and try to fire up the old snow blower for the first time in 2 years.
It'll be quite interesting to see if the thing still runs. It's a two-stage Snapper with a 500cc Briggs&Stratton, so there's hope I guess.
Ya fun how a couple of words can change everything!

Was just this Tuesday that I was cursing the lack of standardized dates. We were reviewing a pile of training records to determine who was due for updates. Some were dated DD/MM/YY some were MM/DD/YY and a small group were even YY/MM/DD. This turned into a nightmare for the 5 and 10 year renewals when you would have some that said something like 07/10/12. Is that Oct 7th 2012, July 10th 2012, Oct 12 2007 or what? We had to physically go through the hard copies to try and find clues as to what was when.
The biggest problem is that no matter how many times you say do the dates as AA/BB/CC (or whatever you chose) somebody will ignore it or out of pure habit do it as BB/AA/CC or however they are used to doing it.
I don't even want to go down the road of how confusing it gets when people don't put AM or PM on reports. "at 3:10 Joe picked up a piece of wood and got a sliver so I sent him to the hospital". Great, they know which 3:10 it was but I have over 600 people that rotate shifts to deal with so don't track who is on at what time of the day it is.

LOL I think several of us have similar stories. One of my dad's get rich quick schemes (pretty sure he lost money every time) was demolishing houses. I was helping him from about age 8 to 10. Since I had no work boots (or any other PPE for that matter) I probably had at least 10 nails go through my foot over the couple of years we did it. If that happened today, with a real employer, an adult employee and the Ministry of Labour found out there would be fines flying everywhere. I can't even picture what would happen if they found out it was an 8 to 10 year old doing the work.
