I'm trying to use FedEx now exclusively when I buy and ship things. Their shipping rates are typically $10+ cheaper.

Last night, at 2136, they let me know that the package would be delayed a business day. Unfortunately, I don't know whether they meant that it was delayed for yesterday, or delayed for today. Assuming they mean it's delayed today as well, because we all know how absolutely terrible they are.

Probably, but I'm holding out on that, since it's going to be a pretty big package, and my truck is still in transit on a train from Alberta

Having filled my weekly quota of snideness and condescension a little early, I'm going to try being constructive for a change.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 8601 Data elements and interchange formats – Information interchange – Representation of dates and times as an international standard covering the exchange of date- and time-related data in 1988. It's a perfectly good standard.

The good people at World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) have a document narrowing this standard down further for ease of use. It's been a de-facto standard for most of the computer industry since before Y2K.

I've been arguing loudly every chance I've had, since 1998, for making this universal across all written communication. It would make life easier for everyone if we stop using antiquated and/or local formats for something as simple, yet crucial, as time and date.

That happened to me like 5 times. But now I get to do whatever I want because I have more experience than anyone else doing pretty much everything we do here.

Although indeed very old the use of the 24 hour clock is neither antiquated nor local. What is at all difficult about understanding there are 24 hours in a day with midnight as the jump off point. What you attached is based on the 24 hour clock and seems seems perfectly innocent at first but then goes sideways fast:


Year: YYYY (eg 1997) Well yeah
Year and month: YYYY-MM (eg 1997-07) OK pretty normal everyplace but what exacty is wrong with month names even in different languages?
Complete date: YYYY-MM-DD (eg 1997-07-16) Fine but most of what I need to know is the date and the month since I don't do much transitioning years
Complete date plus hours and minutes: YYYY-MM-DDThh:mmTZD (eg 1997-07-16T19:20+01:00) So I know the date but not really sure what time it is
Complete date plus hours, minutes and seconds: YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssTZD (eg 1997-07-16T19:20:30+01:00) Am I timing an egg boiling somtime in the future?
Complete date plus hours, minutes, seconds and a decimal fraction of a
second: YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss.sTZD (eg 1997-07-16T19:20:30.45+01:00) WHAT BLOODY TIME IS IT? I AM NOT A COMPUTER THAT NEEDS THIS LEVEL OF TIME!

All in all I can see it being a totally practical system for computers where uniformity helps but seems a bit overkill for day to day use.
Doesn't matter anyway since we still can't get the Americans to understand measurements based on units of 10.


Not convinced that W3C is exactly supporting this standard.
