This chase started not far from where i live.

There are many anti pursuit laws in Australia and specifically the state of Queensland where this occurred. If a vehicle is travelling too fast or if the risk to the public is too great (school zones, dense residential areas) the police are forced to disengage the pursuit. These laws came about because there were a few deaths caused by fleeing criminals and the nanny state in which I live decided it was best not to chase these people by car. They usually just track them by air and then intercept when/if it is safe to do so.

Also in local media the photo of the damaged 86 was captioned as a toyota camry

They stole a Kia and DID get away in it so they were more successful with the Kia than the 86.
Were trying to steal a Hyundai and that was what started the whole thing.

Ya, just gotta love a firing rate of 6,000 rounds per minute ......

For you sports fans, that's like putting one round in every square yard of a football field, every minute.

I was about to say something about how car chases play out differently in other parts of the world, NOT ending in spectacular and intentional crashes on public roads like these Americans seem to expect. Glad you beat me to it :-)

Here in Norway the police abort chase if the bad guy accelerate to speeds the officers deem to be dangerous.
Instead they let them go, hoping they'll slow down and not hurt themselves or anyone else.
They then approach the owner of the vehicle at a later time, and he'll have to tell them who was driving or take the blame.
In the end, almost everyone who does this get caught.

As a bonus, some statistics from Wikipedia:

Road fatalities per 100,000 motor vehicles, 2013
USA: 12.9
Australia: 7.3
Norway: 5.2

And if the vehicle is stolen, or is running without plates, etc? And what do you say when the person running inevitably crashes on their own or runs out of gas, then assaults someone else to steal their vehicle? Or takes a hostage?

Also, I'm pretty sure most chases in the US end with someone running out of gas or crashing all on their own trying to outrun a helicopter or the radio. But that doesn't make for good movies.

Now do the math for miles driven in each of those countries per vehicle, per year. USA number is up there.

A full scale police hunt is launched, every road watched and the culprit is eventually arrested when he decides to park.

That's not inevitable at all, according to police research it's much less likely and that is precisely why they abort pursuit.

Those things just don't happen here in Norway. So no need to consider it as a risk factor.

Culprits crashing on their own trying to outrun the police is what they try to prevent here in Norway.

Probably a very good point!
I've spent all my search-fu trying to find those numbers with no luck. Let me know if you find anything, I'm very interested.

The math is already done since that number is per 100,000 vehicles. It isn't the total.

No, what he means is that if every vehicle drives 3x as many miles per year you'd expect 3x as many fatalities per vehicle.
So what we're looking for is annual fatalities per distance driven in vehicles.
Which should be dramatically worse numbers for Norway; since our roads tend to be short, winding, narrow and slippery.

Having driven rentals in both US and Australia; distances, traffic and road conditions are very similar. So I'd really like to see comparable fatality statistics factoring in distance driven, because any difference there will be purely cultural.

-And all this is totally OT, of course. My bad :-)
