Alfa 4C

Yesterday on my last Christmas shopping port of call I parked next to an Alfa 4C in what had to be the two slots farthest from civilization.

Cool red color, the car is minuscule next to my BRZ. I often gaze at my car fondly after parking her, even after 4 years. But the 4C is the first car to make my car seem "dowdy" maybe even frumpy.

So I go into shops and emerge 30 minutes later and the owner of the 4C is putting away his parcels in the aft, small trunk compartment behind the engine.

We get to talking about cars and he invites me to sit in his Alfa. The car is tiny but no doubt a blast to drive which he confirms.

Getting into my BRZ I feel like I am climing aboard a Greyhound.

Would I trade? Absolutely not. Our cars are very driveable and function well in a life of dogs, groceries and all sorts. Toyota/Subaru pulled off a neat hat trick of driveability in a liveable package

I have to second these points. I'm 6foot 225 lbs and the BRZ fits me with out feeling too tight.

At the Auto Show I tried other cars like I was trying on shoes and most of the sports cars were uncomfortably snug; great for racing, not so good for a daily driver. MX5, Grand Sport Vette, an S-2000.

The BRZ fits my life as a daily driver. It looks great, it's usable, and it zips around town like a flying carpet.

I agree, when I bought my FRS my wife wanter me to get a Lotus. I have has several track cars I could drive on the street, I wanted a street car I could drive on the track. The 86 is a good compromise of everything a person could want in a fun, sporty car. I have even folded the seat down and carried 8' 2x4s. I couldn't even get our two folding lawn chairs in a Lotus.
While I would love to own a 4C, Lotus, or McLaren, I would never trade my FRS for one.

I have to admit my head has been turned lately by an Alfa (an 8C) AND a Lotus Europa S. While they are both devastating looking European jewels, I still turn around and look at my BRZ after I park it, too. The three mentioned mid-engine cars have me digesting butterflies, and I was never a fan of mid-engine aesthetics, but I have a true love.

The BRZ is my late-life fling, and dreaming about the others doesn't make me regret my choice. Never will you catch me saying, "Well, I guess it's a little frumpy . . ." Because it ain't! It's a classic shape, while who knows about the others.

I looked at and drove several Elise and Extige. They were very fun to drive, but were just too spartan for what I wanted this car for. If I was looking for a track car, a Lotus would be in the garage now. I wanted a car I could have fun in the hills with, and take on weekend getaways with the wife. The Toyota so far has worked out great.

Burning miles on a Subaru is better than those other cars mentioned as well.

I am a fan of the 4C. but for the money I would buy a different car. And it only comes in automatic.

A car is meant to be driven. I get the whole, don't ruin your expensive car thing, but honestly if I had the money to comfortably own one of those things(Porsche and upwards), I'd drive the piss out of it. Why have a crazy sports car if all you're going to do is sit in traffic on Sundays, then park it for the week.

I know once I'm old as fuq and have the money to throw away at a decent porsche(Cayman S'ish), I'm going to be ripping that car a new asshole.

It ain't a trophy.

... Did you read the previous sentiment about the twins looking frumpy or dowdy? Cause a 458 will make that happen too.

The only issue with this is... when you get to that point you wind up having 2 or 3 vehicles, and the others just tend to make more sense to drive everyday.

This ^

Also...

The having is frequently not the same level of pleasure as the wanting and getting.

I think it can depend on the car.

I have my BRZ and i love it. I also had the chance to own an S2000 (the one in my sig) for about 6 months before needing to sell it because of an emergency financial situation.

It got to the point where i couldnt decide which car i wanted to drive. I loved both SO MUCH. I still have the BRZ (when deciding which car to sell i decided to stick with the one that had less miles) but hands down if i can afford it again i will get another S2000.

I think everyone has their few choices of vehicles where owning one exceeds the pleasure of wanting one.
