Urgent help needed please!
New to the forum so I apologize if I am posting in the wrong place.
I have a question I am hoping someone can help me with. I have a 13 BRZ Limited with 62k miles, the other morning when I got into the car to leave for work I could not get the car to go into gear once started no matter how much I tried. Eventually it started working after about 45 minutes and I drove to work and it worked fine and shifted smooth the whole way there. Also a few days before this my cruise control and gear indicator light quit working. I took it to my local Subaru shop and they messed with it drove it around and it seemed to work fine. The mechanic did say once he pulled up on the clutch with his foot that the cruise worked and the gear indicator light worked. He told me that I need a new clutch. I am not the most knowledgeable but I believe he is wrong or lying. The clutch is not slipping at all and I don’t drive the car real hard. Once I get it to drive it works fine and shifts smooth at stop signs and red lights etc. once I got home I looked in the floorboard and there was a little switch that the clutch presses in once you let off the clutch. This piece was very loose so I move it forward and tightened the two bolts and now the clutch touches the button at the top and the cruise and gear light work fine. This morning I had the same issue again with the car not wanting to go into gear. I believe that it may be the slave cylinder? Does anyone have any idea what the issue may be? And what do i need to do to fix this I am worried it may lead to something worse if not fixed ASAP. Thank you so much for your help. |

Have someone push the clutch while you watch the slave cylinder move. If it moves well and there's still a problem, you may have a bad diaphragm. If so, your mechanic is right; you'll need a new clutch.
Also look for fluid leaking out of the master and slave cyls. |

Thanks for the reply brother.
Is the slave cylinder under the car or on top? The mechanic watched something move on top of the engine he had me push the clutch and he watched it move and then told me I need a new clutch. |

You need to adjust your clutch pedal back to the way it was.
~~~AND THEN~~~ You need a new clutch. At a minimum, before your mechanic starts work, you need to explain to him exactly what you adjusted.
May not be the whole clutch but it could be the throw out bearing. They usually make noise before they go but there is nothing saying they have too. It is a know issue with these cars.
If it is the slave it should either work or not and isn't likely to be intermittent.
Going with simple first, leave the shifter in neutral with your foot off the pedal for a minute or so, then put the pedal down and quickly try putting it into first.
With a little luck this might warm the fluid and spin the gears getting them to engage. |
So if I do this, and it goes into gear just fine. What is the issue, does that mean it’s the slave or master? It’s weird that it will force perfectly fine once it gets going so I was thinking it may be electrical or either the fluid is having trouble being warm. As it’s now colder in my area I live in East TN.
It is possible the first owner may have adjusted it. It seems to me that it may have just cane loose over time, it was extremely loose. I just pushed it all the way forward and tightened it because I wanted my cc to work.
No I haven’t bled the system or filled it. Should I do this?
I just left work, started the car and put it into reverse on the first try with no trouble it has been sitting there for about 8 hours the temp is about 45 degrees. |
