For video games.

In other news, I am shopping for an engagement ring. Any tips? Planning to spend up to 4 or 5000. The simpler the better, my girl is not one for being flashy.

Edit: before tcoat comes and says "but all you do is complain about her", it's kind of like on the forum here, where you hear a lot of moaning and groaning about problems but never hear much of the good side.

Double edit: is the 3 month's salary something that people truly go by? Cause that's a hell of a lot of money.

I just got engaged myself. My advice? Don't let anyone tell you what to spend. Go to a jeweler with a budget in mind, see what they have and the prices on them. I'd recommend a privately owned place over chain-type stores as you are likely to get better service. I was all about the simple styling when I started looking, but I saw something a bit more elegant and just the right style for my now-fiance (who doesn't wear jewelry like ever). The important thing isn't the price paid, it's the time and attention you spend on finding the ring she never wants to take off.

As far as the ring ....... it don't matter, whatever you feel comfortable in spending and what she thinks is pretty .......

More later ....... this will take some thought ......

I kind of figure that's what's going to happen with me. I've been looking online a bit, and have found that the 3 diamond style is mostly in line with what I think she's going to like. I plan to just to a bunch of research over the next few weeks, and then once I'm home for the winter, I'll plan some creative routes to our usual haunts that just so happen to have jewellery shops on the way and we can do some window shopping.

My thing is, I could spend around 2k cash, anything much more than that, I'd likely need to finance, so that would have to be taken into account. I presume that financing is a regular thing for rings?

Thanks hum!

I have a feeling she won't care for the dollar amount, despite her teasing that she won't accept anything that's a penny less than my 3 months gross.

No, the 3 month thing is something that was cooked up by assholes that sell shiny rocks.

IMHO, forget surprises. Go shopping together.

I didn't do any financing, but I know at least one person who did. Just keep in mind weddings are pretty darn expensive as well. Also you will 'need' wedding bands (as if any of these things are actually needs).

Just don't want to telegraph my plan too much. We're going to be staying at a house on the beach on our trip, and I'd love for my mom (probably my dad though, since he'll be far less overcome with excitement and emotion) to be able to take a picture of the surprise and joy that the girlfriend will have.

Another thing I've been wondering, do I speak with her parents before hand? Some of you guys are fathers of daughters. What would you want?

From speaking with her, it sounds like her parents have a decent dowry so to speak. I believe my parents also have a chunk of change put away for my brother and I when the day comes that we toss our bachelor lives aside.

We've kind of come to the agreement that we want to do a destination wedding, and keep it to just those absolutely closest to us, and have some sort of reception for extended family and friends, so that will keep costs lower

Idk, the surprise was probably my favorite part of the whole thing. The check being my least favorite...

Maybe my situation was a bit different though. We have been together for 8 years so I had a pretty good idea of what she would like once I saw the options. Though as I understand it, it's pretty common to go ring shopping together sooo...

I get that. Equally valid.

Cole, just go with your gut. Never mind convention and tradition. What does she think? Does she want you to break it to her folks? Maybe that would be fun for her. Hell, I dunno.

Ok, bedtime for me. I'll catch all you swinging d!cks tomorrow. Be safe and sleep well.
