^ This. When the transmission oil gets to temperature, the shifts are smooth as butter. Notice this is when gearing 1st 2nd and 3rd. That's because they use triple-cone syncros. The later gears use single cone. That's why 4, 5, 6 are pretty good even when cold.
Why did they do this? triple cone syncros are practically bulletproof, so the trade off is worth it. |

Manual transmissions with dipsticks is kinda rare, but my Saturn SC1 has one.

I'd go further than kinda rare, and say very rare.
Most do not have dipsticks. Jeff

I'm having them check it when I go for an oil change in a few days. I don't think it's empty though. Feels pretty good when warm

Spare tire on top of the engine? E-brake cables running to the front wheels? Manual transmissions with dipsticks? Subaru. ![]() Jeff

I knew a guy who bought an original Subaru 360. He hauled it home in the bed of a pickup.

According the the marsupials in the aussie section of the forum this car has a dipstick hidden down by the trans oil filler hole. They said it was on the mt but I'm not home to verify it.

Has there been any resolution to this problem? I feel like I have a 'slow motion' version of this problem. I have almost 10k miles on the car. I've insisted that the dealer change trans oil. They say the trans feels fine - and I feel like its taking a dump. All shifts feel bad. Lower gears are notchy / gritty / grindy. Any link to a discussion with resolution appreciated. Bryce.
