Is it possible that there's some issue with the automatic transmission having a problem with the extra 5 HP? Not that 5 HP would make the transmission crap out, necessarily, but that over time it would result in a higher rate of warranty claims?

The turbo guys here say the AT stands up better than the MT so I wouldn't think the 5 HP would have that great an effect.

The 5 hp increase is negligible and pretty much nonexistent. MK1 and MK2 set practically the same 0-60 and 1/4 time. MK2 is dynoing higher probably due to the 4.30 FD.

Ok, not only is there a 5hp difference in the engine but the final drive in the MT is 4.3 vs 4.1. It would be nice if they went with a 4.3 in both models as well.

Then the issue of MPG + emissions is brought up, again.

These things don't happen for a reason. 99% of the time it's for reasons you and I don't care for, but make a huge difference for an auto maker.

From reading various forums and web sites that talk about the car, the people who care is every poor sap who knows he is five, FIVE whole hp down on the new one, and that aggression must not stand.

I would LOVE a new 86, but with so few changes (my opinion), and with a long list of mods that I am sure you want, I don't see any reason to not buy used. Then you will be able to buy more mods sooner.

On the other hand...

It really is more than 5hp. The 2013 dyno's approx. 159hp. The 2017dyno's approx. 177hp.

There were incremental engine changes. Some were communicated by the factory, some others not so much. A '12 MT car will have a 1/4-mile time in the range of 15.1 sec, a '16 MT car in the range of 14.9 sec and a '17 MT car in the range of 14.8 sec. In each case the difference is at least the length of a whole car. None of the differences is related much with the final drive ratio change.

Many of these changes are included in the engine of the AT cars, so it is not really the old engine.

I don't know how people don't get this.

The rated HP is measured the same way for each car and is what it says it is. You start throwing cars on wheel driven dynos and you start to get different answers. Then when you start picking and choosing which dyno reading you want to use you make the gaps look as big or small as you want.

Not to mention that it is a documented fact that inertia style dynos (such as dynojet) will calculate lower horsepower with numerically higher gears.
