If you go the "pocket estimate", State Farm WILL low ball you. I have State Farm and I once was hit by someone (not my fault) and State Farm wanted me to hurry and find a body shop. Since I took so long, they sent out an adjuster and he just gave me a low-ball offer. But he also told me that if I took it to a real body shop and the cost was higher than the check, the body shop just had to contact State Farm and they would cover the difference. Because it was not my fault, State Farm handled all the paperwork with the other driver's insurance.

(Most) insurance companies aren't stupid. They have figured out that people will ask for enough money to cover brand new factory parts and professional body work but will turn around and buy used or aftermarket parts and get their buddies to finish the painting. Then those people will just pocket the difference. State Farm's "low ball" offer will be to cover this situation.

I ended up taking it to a body shop (of my choice), gave them the check State Farm cut in my name, and told them to contact State Farm if they needed more money. They did and State Farm paid them without any hassle to me.

You can try to get an estimate and negotiate with State Farm but I suspect they will just tell you to leave it at the body shop and they (State Farm) will pay them directly.

You have a couple of things here. 1st take it to 3 shops and get estimates. Prices will vary. Check Yelp etc to see their reviews. That will give you a better idea of what the damage is.

#2 is DIMINISHED VALUE! Your car has now been in an accident so you will not be able to sell it for as much when it's time to sell it. You need to also go after that difference. A car appraisal of both pre- and post damage will help you with your case. You may need to go google diminished value to see how others have went after it.
