That said, as an old guy I worked for as a kid would tell me every time I wished for something, "Son, go over in that corner, hold out your hands and cup them. Wish in your left hand. Then piss in your right hand. Let me know which one fills up first."

There are multiple Norman Chubbyknuckle Choruses singing the prayers of the Subaristi for more steam in these things. Maybe it will happen. My money is on not. C'est la vie. Or we can take cues from a bunch of tyro journos who don't own these things and spend the rest of our lives pissed off that Subaru is holding out on us.
Serious question then: Why not just spring for the Edelbrock SC? about the right price and power for your stated desires...

Honest answer? Three parts. First, it's not really THAT big a deal to me. I almost never experience a desire for more HP or TQ. If I were a Rocky,
or Sierra Nevada apex strafer it might well be different. The nearest real mountains are several long days drive away and not in the direction I usually go. Second and more directly resopnsive to your question, in my experience, the hop up trade off is seldom if ever worth the trade offs/cost. I built and raced motorcycles for years and found power extraction fraught with pitfalls. Even a relatively conservative mod like the Edelbrock SC is an added complication that can do nothing positive for reliability. The car is a blast as is, and for the very few times I'd use the added capability it's just not worth it. Finally, my car is primarily a road trip warrior. It currently has just over 12k miles on it in two years. 8k to 9k of that has been on trips of 500 miles or more. These trips are generally on two lane state highways or their US equivalents. The car is just about perfect as is for those uses.

If the factory built an engine around a 260HP/200TQ output I'd think nothing of saddling the car up to drive coast to coast. I don't think I could be comfortable doing that with an AM SC on this car.

I'd love this car with an NA 3L H-6 assuming it met the rest of the requirements. I don't think Subie will ever build one and that's not all that disappointing. FOR ME, the power would be nice for S&G, but I don't think it would affect my enjoyment of the car much if at all. I know, I admitted I'd pay a surcharge to get it and I would, but primarily so I could HAVE it, not because I'd really use it.

Does that make sense? Hope so.

Beef up the power that much and the car would be a decent bit heavier due to having to beef up the rest of the car to handle the power and still be reliable. An OEM power boost i would say would be to a higher standard than your average hobbyist adding a supercharger. Not saying it would weigh 4000 lbs all of a sudden, but to expect same weight is unrealistic imo.

Not to mention the price hike associated with it. Your $27k affordable 200bhp 2500lb sports car becomes a $35k 260bhp 3000lb car overnight. That places it into a different market segment with different competition.

I've posted this before, but since it speaks exactly to your point....

I don't disagree with anything any of you said. And that, my friends, is why I 1) don't expect Subaru to do it and 2) am not going to spend any time at all pining away for a car that is not going to happen or complaining about the car that has happened. I think Subaru probably COULD come close to my 'target' but, couldn't meet the weight component without adding all sorts of expensive lightness.

I'm tickled to death with the car as it sits in my garage. I fully intend to hold on to it in its current configuration as long as I can.
