I've been doing a lot of drifting lately in Assetto Corsa on Oculus. Tandeming in VR is amazing. My current wheel setup is an ancient Fanatec 911 Turbo S wheel and shifter with G25 pedals.

Just got a G29 and consequently picked up Dirt4 and JCars2. I need a stand and a seat and we'll golden...kinda stupid set up right now.
Also, got the shifter as Best Buy is running a deal. It's $100 off and they're including the shifter, so figured what the hell...just money, right? |

I've been into simracing for many years going back to GPL in 1998. I used to race in the VEC league for a few seasons, our team even won the championship in LMP2 one year. But we lost a few team members and after that I sort of got out of it. I still follow the progress of all the sims and still have all my hardware. One of these days I will pick it back up.
If anyone is interested in what VEC is all about. It's an endurance racing league. They do 4 to 24 hour races. So it's a team effort with driver swaps. VEC is now on their 10th season. I participated in seasons 3, 4 and 5 with Lost Wrench Racing. After that one of our guys had a baby and stopped racing so the team fell apart. I raced with the league admin's team a few times but the team wasn't organized (Jimmi just didn't have time to run the league and put in a real effort for the team) so I sort of dropped out. VEC started off using rFactor1 and then switched to rFactor2. The owner of Studio-397 (the developer of rFactor2) is also an admin and driver over at VEC. The races are broadcasted on YouTube with commentators and all. When I raced with the league we capped the entries to 40 teams. Today it's grown to 3 servers with 40 teams per server. Each team has anywhere from 2 - 5 drivers. Over the years they have had lots of real life racers from FIA GT, Formula E, Porsche Cup, WEC and so on. Here are some links if anyone is interested: https://www.studio-397.com/ https://simracing.club/vec-d1-teams/ https://www.facebook.com/VirtualEndurance/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSL...DJtXHagrSCVZcQ Edie's son is a little older now and he also has a computer capable of running rF2. I need to start pushing him to race again. ![]() Oh, there is also an FR-S available for rF2. I haven't tested it so I don't know if it's any good. |

But yeah, try rF2. There is a free demo you can try first. They change up the free content from time to time. I'm not sure what they are packing in the demo currently. It also goes on sale on Steam from time to time. If you do get rF2, I am willing to lend a hand if you run into problems. |

Yeah I tried ARMA and it didn’t perform very well for me. I wasn’t that dedicated so I sort of gave up. I’m not really a gamer. I got it for my son. The sim racing thing came after I started autoxing and wanted a fix between events. So most people would call me a gamer but I don’t really look at it that way. Hahaha |

I like the Forza and Gran Turismo franchises just fine but I am glued to Project Cars 2 (XB1). I love everything about it as it strips away all the fluff I don't care about in the Forza and GT franchises and focuses on the racing. The tire modeling, physics, weather and multiplayer license system is all very good.
It was a bit rough around the edges prior to the latest patch but damn it is good now. Edit to add setup: I have the G920 setup with the open wheeler racing seat.

I am. I don't get to play as much as I like, because well, I am usually racing my real cars
I built a pretty budget cockpit with a mid-range PC setup and Logitech G27. Works good enough! In fact, I just did a video on it this week since the racing off-season is settling in here.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tGrDaNqwEw[/ame]

Ever since crashing my MR2 at the track I get kind of nervous when I drive around bends :/ Is driving in a sim realistic enough for the skills to transfer to the real world? I want to build up my car control skills in a cheap and safe environment, seems like Assetto Corsa is a good option. Probably gonna start out with a cheap 250 dollar Ebay seat/cockpit and Logitech G27, with a Pimax 4K so the VR headset can serve dual duty in a virtual desktop, doing away with monitors. Are the nicer steering wheels worth the extra money? The prices seem pretty steep for such a simple device.
I noticed you can get a basic 2 axis motion simulator from https://dofreality.com/ for only 1200, which seems like a good deal. Do they work well? Is the 3 axis worth it? I feel like driving a car doesn't create very much yaw torque, so my gut feeling is no, but maybe oversteer would feel more authentic with the 3 axis. |

When we bought our twins last year, my wife decided to get back into autocrossing. She did well back in 2009 in our Scion tC, but that was FWD. When she started autocrossing the FR-S, she was spinning almost every-other run. After a weekend of that, I set her up in Project Cars, in the FR-S, on Laguna Sega...in the rain. It took the better part of a day, but she got to where she could attack the course and keep the car under her in the sim.
That was over a year ago. With 2 to 4 days of autocrossing per month at various venues, I think she has spun twice in the last 14 months. |
