This car needs more 17x8 wheel options. I'm looking at a few different sets for my own street car, including Braid wheels. Not sure yet though.

Braid is a great option for wheels, especially since they can do custom offsets. My buddy runs them on his rally BRZ.

I'm getting a quote from them for a set of lightened 17x8 +40 Fullrace A wheels.

Cool. We're not a dealer for them yet, but we'd like to be one. I'm planning on contacting them soon. Maybe we can work out a group buy deal.

I'm going to Braid Wheels USA directly for them. My friend with the rally BRZ is friends with and does stage rally events with them, so he's acting as liaison for me to get the quote right now. I've met them at a hillclimb in Michigan before, great people.

And his Porsche...

Yeah that is awesome. The Toyota Motorsport GT86 rally car uses them too.

I think this is the one constant throughout the classes. People are going to pony up some cash for bling as fuck wheels. Totally and completely unnecessary, but sometimes looks nice.

Do you always get out of the wrong side of bed?!

I think wheels, much like exhausts, are a pretty personal decision. As long as they meet the rules, I could care less whether someone spends $700 on a set or Rotas or $3000 on their custom fluffy unicorn specials.

I don't see the problem.

Braid wheels aren't too bling and they're reasonably priced. Just a good strong flowcast wheel. Usually custom, which in this case could work out well.

Examples:

MSRP is $309 a wheel for a 17x8. That's not bad. The "lightened" version adds some cost. Again, I'm not a dealer for them but I've always liked them. I'm going to see if I can work something out.

There are also no rules against custom paint jobs, or window tint, or other expenses that make no meaningful difference.

If one of my competitors wants to spend 2k on an exhaust made from unobtainium and then spend more time and money making it as functional and legal as a much cheaper exhaust...I don't care.

-Same goes for wheels. If they safely make weight and offset requirements, I don't care if a competitor has wheels custom made from unicorn tears and spends 10k on them.

I think my bed only faces where I can get up on the wrong side.

I guess my point was, it was communicated that this class is Spec. People complained about the cost barrier to STX and said this is a fantastic way for me to not spend money. Now people are spending money (mind you much more than my STX wheels) to get the nth degree of weight out.

Seems silly to me that a spec class involves pushing the limit on something that should be...I dunno, spec?

Call me crazy.

Personally, I could care less too. I just find it funny how Howard's message of class philosophy is already being violated.

You're violating my head!

The spec is in the rule - must weigh 17lbs, 17X8 +40. How you get there is up to you and I like that, as I suspect do many others.

Well, the legal wheel options out there are kinda limited if you want something that's light and as close to the lowest offset as possible. I don't care for the look of many of the best deal wheels, and most of those have a +45 offset or higher. Which means the added cost of extended studs and spacers if I want a +40 offset.

The Braid wheels are ~$1,200, that's hardly an unheard of amount of money for a set of decent autox wheels. I'm not sure exactly how much it'll cost to make them a bit lighter, which is why I asked for a quote. I still doubt it will be an unheard of amount.

In reality, I will probably go with something cheaper in the end. But it's nice to have the option for something that is ideal specs for class and that I actually like the look up. Plus I get to directly support some local grassroots racers, all while not spending a ton. That'd be a win in my book.
