You guys don't have Chevron in Ontario? Their reputation with the drag racers here is solid. First 'Top Tier' gas selected by auto companies, too.

But to be sure I checked it out on the way home. Each pump has two hoses. One that you select 87 89 or 91 from has a label that says it may contain 10% ethanol. Separate line for only 94 has a label that says contains no ethanol. Good to go over here.

Half the USA is stuck with 91 octane. Subaru/Toyota know this very well. All it means is the engine isn't overrated like all the current turbo engines, and you'll need 93 octane to ensure 200HP assuming a worst-case engine build with worst-case break-in.

from what i remember i think Chevron 94 octane is 3 or 4 cents/litre more than 91 octane. and 94 octane is usually 14 or 15 cents above regular. It's a $1.55 or something here right now for 94

Gents, make sure don't mix up discussions about methanol and ethanol. Hydrolific isn't that bad when you consider that ethanol is sometimes used for gasline antifreeze.

http://www.wheels.ca/Auto%20Know/article/784229

Ethanol content is legislated in some provinces so you can't avoid it. Since it has higher octane it is can be an efficient way to blend premium fuels. Shell's max is 91 AKI and if it says no ethanol there shouldn't be any! (see above) Lawyers won't allow that. But if they have to use it somewhere it will be probably be in regular if they say it is not in premium. Also remember that midgrade is often a mix of regular and premium if the station uses blender pumps and only has two underground tanks. This is a more efficient distribution method than having 3 seperate tanks. So some of the 93/94 AKI fuels in Canada may be based on premium blended with ethanol to give the octane boost. But as suggested they should be marked as containing ethanol if they do.

What you may have to worry about is the EPA allowance in the U.S. which allows up to 15% ethanol some places as now you are outside the warranty rules whether they be legal or performance based. And in that case it is probably not whether it would create a problem but rather if there is another problem. You might not get any support if the fuel is tested and found to outside the requirement.

Almost all gasoline powered cars have had knock sensors for years. They hear knock before people can, and will automatically retard the timing to prevent further knock. But notice the BRZ manual says that some knocking in certain conditions may be heard anyway!! So don't be surprised, potentially even with 93AKI.

Usually a "little" transient knock during really hard acceleration or engine lugging isn't going to do any long term damage. Its really heavy knock on a regular basis, and that hasn't really been seen for many years, if the stock timing is maintained.

In Sacramento, CA, you can buy 100 octane for $8.40 a gallon. It's at the corner of Marconi and Watt. I have yet to try it with my FR-S.

Watt Tosco Union 76
2847 Watt Ave
(916) 489-7133
Sunoco GT 100 octane unleaded at the pump. It' a little way from Toronto though.
$8.40/gallon ( a little pricey)

the argument is that petrocan adds ethanol to get the higher octane vs shell which is argued to be a better quality gas (the 91 anyway)

so do you go for a lower octane rating and have the car adjust (even says so in the manual) or go for the right octane rating but burn through gas quicker (or so they say)

i just filled up my first tank after leaving the dealership and i got 400km on 39 liters (petro can 94)

i've been a shell customer all my life though, so i'm gonna run with Petro for a bit and then switch, see whats up.

i have over 10K airmiles so i can get myself 1000 bucks worth of gas for free :/

I think Petro Canada is the only gas station in Montreal that has 94 but it is called SuperClean 94. Guess I will try out Petro next time I need to fill up, I just hope they have a paypass like Esso (only reason I am using them right now). There is a place outside that has 108 octane, but this isn't no Koenigsegg lol

JUST TO CLEAR UP THE CONFUSION

I lived in BC and ON 50/50 for most of my life.

In Toronto the only option above 91 octane is Petro Canada 94. It does contain Ethanol. In terms of 91, the most popular option seems to be Shell (no Ethanol).

In BC Chevron carries 94 octane with no Ethanol (lucky!)

The warranty will cover you if you fill up on 91 octane.

This is from the BRZ manual

Quote:

Fuel information
■Fuel tank opening for unleaded gasoline
To help prevent incorrect fueling, your SUBARU has a fuel tank opening that
only accommodates the special nozzle on unleaded fuel pumps.
■If your engine knocks
●Consult your SUBARU dealer.
●You may occasionally notice light knocking for a short time while accelerating
or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern.
■Gasoline quality
In very few cases, driveability problems may be caused by the brand of gasoline
you are using. If driveability problems persist, try changing the brand of
gasoline. If this does not correct the problem, consult your SUBARU dealer.
■Fuel octane rating
This octane rating is the average of the Research Octane and Motor Octane
numbers and is commonly referred to as the Anti Knock Index (AKI).
Using a gasoline with a lower octane rating can cause persistent and heavy
knocking, which can damage the engine. Do not be concerned if your vehicle
sometimes knocks lightly when you drive up a hill or when you accelerate.
Contact your SUBARU dealer if you use a fuel with the specified octane
rating and your vehicle knocks heavily or persistently.
The engine is designed to operate at maximum performance using
unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 93 AKI (98 RON) or
higher. If 93 AKI (98 RON) fuel is not readily available in your area,
unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 AKI (95 RON) may be
used with no detriment to engine durability or driveability. However,
you may notice a slight decrease in maximum engine performance
and you may hear some knocking (pinking) of an engine while using
91 AKI (95 RON) fuel. Use of 91 AKI (95 RON) fuel will not affect your
warranty coverage.
