oil catch can/air oil separator
oil catch can /air oil separator, is it really needed or a must mods for our NA engine even if I'm not boosted? what are the benefits? is it really just for show for non boosted engines?

Not for show, it really catches brown liquid (oil/water/fuel).
This is about 1cl after 1600km (~1000mile) of city driving. Only home-work traffic. Don't think I went over 3000rpm.

Whether or not they are necessary has been a hotly debated topic on pretty much every forum I've ever been a part of. Personally, I love a good DIY project, especially under the hood, so I pieced one together for my car. At the very least, it will prevent hot crankcase liquids from reaching your intake plenum and in turn heating your intake charge, however infinitesimally insignificant that delta temperature may be. It will also help keep your intake plenum clean, which is nice if you ever plan on taking it apart to port/polish or whathaveyou.

Whether or not is necessary has already been figured out by the manufacturer and that is answered by the presence of them in our car from the factory.
Is an oil, cooler, trans cooler or paint protection film necessary? Not really but we like taking better care of our cars so put that sucker in there. I figured it's just a few bucks extra and it doesn't hurt. I wouldn't spend $200-300 on them since the same thing can be made for a fraction of the price. $20 and it works fine: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110401 Just emptied it out after about 1 year(4k miles) after installing it and it was only about a half once of oil in there but I don't race the car around either. |

Is it a must or needed?
No. Would I recommend it if you plan on keeping your car beyond 2 or 3 years? Yes. Our cars are split between port and direct fuel injection and any oil that makes its way into the intake will only be washed off the valves when the port injection is active. Its not uncommon for direct injection only cars to gum up their valves quickly because of this. A good catch can will greatly reduce the volume or even stop any oil from making its way to your intake. I empty mine out every four weeks and there is about a tablespoon's worth in there. More if I have been running on e85.

Port injection doesn't clean the manifold sadly. Catch can is good! Get one!

I've never considered getting one for any of my cars till I got my brz. I just want peace of mind knowing how our valves can look after awhile.

An oil catch can is an absolute must on those cars because the oil vapor / mist from the poorly designed PCV system would combine with the EGR gasses to cake-up the intake manifold and bind-up the secondary plates that are placed near the cylinder head ports. The result would be power loss above 3,500 rpm and then you had to disassemble and clean-out the upper and lower intake manifolds. Without the catch can, this became an almost mandatory service requirement every 50,000 - 100,000 miles.

thnx for the input guys i guess im going to get one myself then... any recommendations on brands? a good one that wont break the bank? i checked cusco but it doesnt seem like theres a part of it that u can empty/toss out the junk oil.
