Considering a brz. Opinions?
Hey guys. So like the title says, I'm considering a brz. I like the frs/gt86 too but I'll get the brz if I can simply to have a Subaru badge. I drove one and they drive extremely nicely. My concern is mostly just how useable the car would be for me where I live. I live in Oklahoma on the interstate. I have a 2014 5.0 mustang and I love it. But I am selling it because everyone has a mustang. I don't want a muscle car. Unfortunately there are very few twisty roads around here. 80 percent of my time driving is spent on an interstate usually. Unless I'm just toying around. Now I have every intention of modifying whatever I get quite a bit. It won't be a daily. And there are a couple other cars I am considering. A 350z, an m3 possibly, maybe an s2k. I'm still in the decision process. Ive had an rx7 and an rx8 before. I'd love an fd. But I don't really have the facility anymore to keep them running. I like the miata too but I'm simply too big for it
So anyway, I just wanted to get a few opinions on the brz/86/frs with the consideration of it being modified. More so than an exhaust or something. (Likely fi, suspension, body, brakes, the whole shebang kinda) Thanks guys! |

So True...
There is a saying in the UK, "Ford Escorts are like back sides, every one has one".
In america it would be "Mustangs are like asses, every one has one".

Won't be on the list for Street Outlaws without a complete drive train replacement.
Maybe brakes too, but there's nothing to run into out there. Right? ![]() Depending on the highway, expansion joints and the extra jarring may be a consideration.

If not a daily and willing to mod for the long, straight, flat roads then it may be an OK choice. You will lose much of what the car was built for though so there may be better choices out there. On the plus side there can't be many of them so you would certainly stand out in the crowd.

If you're coming from a 5.0 Mustang, the straight line acceleration of the BRZ is going to feel ...lackluster, to say the least. I know you said you've driven it--do you feel like you could be truly happy with the car's power? If so, there's huge aftermarket support for this car (at least relative to other cars i've owned in the past) and new parts should keep you entertained for quite a while--especially if you're going to look beyond just the bolt on power mods.
If you have any track days or autocross events around you--that's where the car is really a step above the rest. It would definitely be more suited for those than a mustang, so if that's something you're interested in it may be a good choice! |

Thanks
And you are right. I typically see an average of 10 mustangs a day. Just going to work and back lol. Also I should mention, my mustang is fast and fun. But I am kinda wanting something slower. Well, in a way. My mustang is fast. But I gotta be going 120 plus to wring t out at all. And at 150 it's still stable and easy to drive. I want something quick but that doesn't have to go so fast to be fun. Hence why I am considering the brz as my top choice

Also, speculating a bit here, but I imagine the road noise in the BRZ is going to be much louder than the Mustang. Something to consider ... unless I am very wrong here?

Also yes I plan to modify it if I get one. My only complaint with the power actually isn't that it doesn't have enough, it's mostly that it doesn't have much down low. Which can be worked around. I've driven rotaries enough to know that.
The only two problems I had with the car while driving it were the lack of low end torque (which, like I said, isn't that big of a deal. Rotaries have less) and the clutch. The clutch is horrible. Not because it's hard to feel, but because it's way too light for me. But that's not that hard a fix |

Yes. And road noise doesn't bother me. My daily is a 77 f100 and my mustang has a pretty loud exhaust. Not to mention my job and playing in a rock band has left me with pretty poor hearing
