I'm getting the impression from these "passing" threads that way too many people are just passive passengers behind the wheel looking at nothing beyond the bumper in front of them.

I'm not afraid of being there, but it seems to me that several things can happen in that lane, the vast majority of which are bad. So why spend any more time there than you have to?

Between 2 semis is a really uncomfortable place to be. That said, these guys cannot afford to get tangled up with a car. If you need to get around slow down enough to force the guy behind to give you some room. Stick your nose out and take a peek. If it's not clear then move back over and wait for an opportunity. Use geography. Uphills will slow these guys down. Use the chance to carve out some maneuvering room. See if you can make the pass after the crest. A little patience and a bit of planning will help immensely.

i'm sorry you had to witness the MC collision. I can certainly understand the trauma witnessing a catastrophe like that can cause. When I was about 20 I was on my way home late one night after playing tennis with a friend and watched in my rearview mirror as a guy in a pick up took a corner at a speed neither he nor the truck could pull off. He slid into a curb, rolled the truck, was ejected and run over by the truck. We made a quick U-turn and went back to render aid. The driver was conscious when ems picked him up, he died on the way to the hospital. It's not the stuff of nightmares, but I'll never forget his name.

I sure as hell don't have all, or even most, of the answers. I'm convinced, however that far too many people are behind the wheels of cars who should not be. I was once on a mountain road when I was stock and just got the car and this pick up truck in front of me was driving pretty slow. Up comes an on coming passing lane that has a corner after it and I decide to take it. This guy decides to speeds up with me to block me and I couldn't pass him (obviously). And here comes an on coming car. I literally had to slam on my brakes and swerve back into the regular lane in back of him to avoid a head on. I didn't even get close to passing him. lol.
I now commute on the same road every day and I come across the same thing everyday when you try to pass people on these roads. Now it's hella simple to bypass douches.
Speed saves lives. lol
I can never go back to stock.

Passing on a track takes skill.
Passing on a normal road takes power.

I find that illogical.
Those are the people that end up selling the car bc it doesn't suit their needs in the end (comfort).
I bought this to have fun and nothing else.
Almost 5 years down the line, this car never fails me.

I couldn't have said it better. At least your guy was responsible for his own demise. Strangely, watching the death rattle is a lot less traumatic than one would think. It was much more a teaching moment for me than anything else. Rules of the road, appreciating my dad's situational awareness, frailty, mortality, blah blah...

That shit can't be learned watching youtube clips.

No offense, Mav. That was a good one.

Or, just maybe, if you can't pass a cruising car that is doing the same speed as your car on the highway, you don't know how to drive a stick.
An automatic will make an FR-S pass any car. Fact.

Even easier to downshift the auto. Odd how you don't see any AT dudes in here complaining they cant pass.

I don't think it is about cruising, it seems to be more of a situational awareness thing. It's like some of the crash videos out there, where you can see the mess develop and people just drive right in to the scene of the crash and add their car to the pile.

Dunno' about any of you, but I pay very little attention to the car in front of me, I'm mostly watching four or five ahead. I plan to be already past the problem before the drones in front of me figure it out.

The car is perfectly capable of passing another car in almost any reasonable situation. I've discovered I do drive the way you have to ride an MC, and that's aggressive self-preservation. Sailing up on someones ass and realizing way too late a pass is in order is not the way to do it.

I paddle shift on my car and pass whoever drives like a slow ass in the middle lane. Ever wonder why those Prius drivers like to rev and race.

If it takes a lot of planning, that means the car is slow
I travel a lot and dive a lot of rental cars. I sure do plan a lot when I drive those cars since i know the passing power is horrible.
I don't need any planning with my frs and definitely not the evo as I can make any situation work in my favor.

People need to stop pretending the frs is above an eco box in terms of sheer passing power.
It's not. They are the same.

I donno, my MC has 100BHP, if I overtake a 60mph car I'm usually pushing 100mph by the time I actually pass them about 2 seconds later.

I still plan each overtake carefully. Though usually that's working out how many of them I can do in one go. I think about 8 in my current record. Which was very naughty as I started the overtake in 5th at 50mph and pulled in coming close to the red line with the world in front shifting into the blue and the mirrors shifting into the red.

I know you guys are only picking up on what you call "Compacts", ie. cars without V8s that are not the size of a small house. But... over here an Eco-box is something like a Puegot 107 or a Toyota Yaris/Agyo-slow. They have 800cc or 900cc engines.

If you are struggling to pass one of those you need help. Start a thread on how to drive the GT86 properly and we will try and help.

Oh and http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Mustang+dealers+in+my+area

@Capt Spaulding I think we are just picking at details, I think we essentially agree.

I can understand if you want more power, but this statement is just absurd.

60-100 mph times

2013 FR-S manual: 9.8 s
2016 Civic EX CVT: 14.3 s
2016 Cruz LT auto: 14.0 s
2017 Elantra auto: 13.9 s
2016 Mazda 3 auto: 14.3 s
2016 Corolla manual: 16.3 s

It's not even close (assuming you're downshifting to the right gear in the FR-S).
