The 86 is what it is. Works well when it is revved past 5000. Some people like this. The majority of "average" drivers require torque at low revs. Torque that is available for a longer time with a flatter torque curve. Horsepower means nothing to most drivers. Torque is what you feel in the seat of your pants.
In every day commuting .... the 86 is not the "ideal" vehicle for "most" people. I drove the car to work for 3 years. What I missed most was any kind of low or mid range grunt. What I enjoyed was hitting the apex on the entry ramp to the freeway with full momentum. I still laugh at the people behind me trying to match my entry speed. what I desire is a car that can give me BOTH characteristics. Again, it is what it is (Yogi Berra). Nothing more. Nothing less.

The Prius is NOT a 9 second car, its a 10.5 second car, its dead slow. I used the Prius to bait you, and you took it. Under electric power it moves ok, it seems quick even though its not, but even then its still weaker than the FRS under 3.5K rpm, so if you lose to a Prius even at this range...I'm sorry, but you not very good at getting the most out of a car and you might actually lose to a minivan with a Mustang because you don't understand your car's power band. The Prius hits a wall on power the moment the engine turns on, if you thought torque dip was bad the Prius engine is significantly worse, almost like a aggressive speed limiter. Another reason I used the Prius to bait you, is it confirms to me you're assuming the 86/BRZ is always in the torque dip, while selling up these economy cars at their absolute peak, that's why I called your assertions dishonest. If you permanently set the 86/BRZ on the torque dip side, it will always be slower than an economy car...but that's only a 1000 rpm range out of 7500. Avoid the entire 3500-4500 rpm, its shockingly easy either upshift or downshift before that. Yes, I said upshift, if you stayed under 3.5K rpm...you have more torque than a Corolla ever could muster at its absolute peak which is 4000 rpm, let alone another compact, or Prius. Give the Corolla a head start, and drive the FRS like a granny, shifting early...you'll still beat it without a sweat. |

Best in the high 20s or so and still OK when pushing as high as 49. Not so sure the performance at 60 is where I would want it to be though.

A prius makes 300 lb ft of torque from its electric motor at 0 rpm. An s2k has the peak power to make up for the lack of torque and a higher rev range. An s2k can cover a lot more ground than a frs in a short range. It can gap an frs a car length within 2-3 seconds. It's physics, not driving style. It took 7-8 seconds to get within safe lane switching distance. And that's from rolling where the frs has a huge advantage. You are not going anywhere off the line buddy.
