Are we really still debating this after 5+ years?

The brain needs the satisfaction of knowing it made a right decision. Hence MT owners reinforce their decision. Then the AT owners reinforce their decision. Simple psychology. However, the world is not black and white but gray, so the best decision is different for different people.

AT has come a long way and can have many benefits. The future is really gonna be AT, but I doubt MT will go away.

I repeat: Have you read the first two posts in this thread?
Yes, I read them. I don't agree, but I read them.

I drove it, dealer was offering me a great deal on it because he had been stuck with it due to its auto transmission. It wasn't bad for an auto, but I didn't even come close to buying it. Ended up paying a little more for a MT with more miles on it.

I own both an AT and a MT. I prefer the MT when competing or otherwise driving at the limit, but prefer the AT for everything else. Heck, when we made road trips to the various competitions we attended this year ,I would have liked to have been in the AT for the trip there and back....particularly when stuck in stop-and-go traffic on a couple of the trips.

At the limit, I prefer the MT, but I spend comparatively little time in that mode of driving. The AT does a much better job at performance driving than the MT does at comfort driving in stop-and-go traffic.

For DD with no plans of serious competition driving, I would go with the AT. If the twin is going to be a weekend fun car and/or track car, I would go with the MT.

Dude I tried for years to teach my wife, she couldn't learn with me in the car. My friend was trying to teach his GF how to drive a manual, she couldn't learn either. We swapped and taught each others' ladies, and it was like a 10x confidence modifier for them, both have picked it up at this point.

One thing that really helped is we sat them both on a beater motorcycle (woo old nighthawk FTW) and had them feel the clutch grab point while straddling the bike, and walked the bike up the street while going on and off clutch, like you do in the MSF class. Then we had them try in the car - it really seemed to help them understand the friction zone.

I haven't had the opportunity to flog an 86 auto, just a fun test drive. Is it still very possible to get it sideways when a fit of immaturity strikes? After purchase I might be interested in attending a local "learn to drift" school thing... juvenile, I know, but would it still be able? I might not get a say in the AT/MT debate (medical).

Before my wife decided to co drive the MT with me at the track, she ran her AT for a few events...and spun that thing about 6 times between two events. (After a weekend of project cars in the rain, she has spun only twice in ~10 months.)

Sure, that's great but I don't see the point of my wife trying learn to drive a manual when she has enough on her mind trying to drive an auto. For her a car is just a mode of transport; there is no enthusiasm in cars just like I have no interest in handbags or shoes.

Ah, my insistence at her learning paid dividends when I got really ill while we were on a road trip. We took my fun car and I was rendered incapable of driving part of the way back. I wasn't forcing her to do it all the time, I looked at it the same way I looked at making sure she knew how to change a tire.
