In-n-Out has been my go-to fast food hamburger joint since high school (early 80's). Back then it was a Socal-only restaurant. I've always ordered the same thing: Double-double with raw and grilled onions, no salt (on the patty) and extra chopped chilies. I probably do In-N-Out once a month nowadays.
I'll only eat a McDonalds burger occasionally (maybe 2-3 times a year) and the other burger joints even less (Burger King, Carl's Jr etc), just out of convenience (if there isn't an In-N-Out close by and we're at the mall etc).

I have a back in the day McD story. When I was a kid, McDs was such a treat. But like Dadhawk said, they had hamburgers, Cheese burgers, fries and drinks. Hamburger, fries and a shake was a meal, not the gigantic meal deals of today, and they made everything fresh on site. When I was in Cub Scouts, my Mom was den mother. Every year she would call the local McDs and ask to bring the boys down for a tour. The manager always was happy to have us. Those original tiny golden arches buildings had a basement. They would take us down and show us the automatic potato peeler and cutter (they were so proud of that) and water bath. They would show us the meat grinders and patty presses, and take us thru the Kitchen. As a little boy it was so cool. Then at the end, they would set all us up, about 12 boys and my Mom, with a hamburger, fries and a drink, and never once asked my Mom for a dime.

I worked at McD in high school. Before starting, I assumed I would be so sick of McDonalds, that I would never want to eat there again. Just the opposite happened, I would get a craving for their hamburgers on my days off, and often stopped in to get a hamburger.
I actually still like McDonalds - unfortunately my bowels don't. |
