Tire Suggestions please?
Hello everyone,
I haven't posted or kept up on these forums in a long while, as I have not really had the time or money to make upgrades on my FRS. But now I have some funds available and am looking to start making some, starting with my wheels, tires, and breaks/calipers. Unfortunately, I have very little experience in this field, or making changes to my cars in general, so it's all very new to me, even after having my FRS for over 5 years now. It's been a little daunting cycling through all these tire/wheel sites trying to choose, when I really just don't know what I'm talking about. I'm just looking for a little advice or tire suggestions for the budget I have. I don't quite have the money to be outlandish or expensive in my choices, so please consider the following... Wheels; Konig Oversteer Gloss Black 18x8.0 +45 5x100 No drop Budget; ~$600 for 4 tires after wheel purchase (can be a little flexible) Red Calipers ??? not sure which yet Daily Driver, No tracking, lots of snow during winter, hot summers (so basically looking for all season, semi sleek, performance. Still want to have fun with my car obviously.) Based on a lot of research and looking around on tire rack and carid ect, and basically looking at nearly every entry on the Wheel directory, I feel like 225-245/35/R18 is what I want to go after? Looking for some help please!! Suggestions on tires and sizes are GREATLY appreciated, thanks! |

I have konig oversteer wheels. 18x8 and 18x9. I had 245/35 all around. It is too wide for the 8" wheel. Yes it fit, but was not optimal. Now I have a 225/40 on the 18x8 +45 and much happier. My tires are MPSS.
I would get 225/40 for the 18x8 +45. For under $600 a set, Tirerack has BFG Comp-2, Pirelli P-Zero's, Hankook v12, and Sumitomo HTRZ II of III's (and many more options) For just above your budget, you could get the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3 (amazing all season tires) After the discount tirerack has, they are $634.28. via Imgflip Meme Generator

You should really know why you are modding your car.
You will get questionable benefits, waste money, and devalue your car. Spend your money on track days, trust me. You'll see how silly this modding thing is. |

Wheels are either about performance or looks. If you don't care about getting the lightest wheels possible or getting wheels wide enough for specific tires to run at the track, then it is just about what you like.
However the larger the wheel the heavier, and you will feel it with 18"s. On a stock car that extra weight can make a big difference. The other thing is it is worth keeping the stock wheels and throwing winter tires on them for when it is cold and snowy, so you can mount summer tires on the new set. The performance difference is huge. |

I recently got some Continental ExtremeContact Sports and they're the best street tires I've ever had. As good in dry and better in the rain than MPSS. There's a $70 rebate right now too.

On a lightweight RWD car like this, snow tires are a must in heavy snow. All seasons don't work as well as they would on a typical FWD car. |

Skip the BBK, waste of money if you're not tracking the car lots. Just get an upgraded set of pads and be done with it.
If you're looking at performance all seasons, or pure summers, you're going to NEED proper snow tires for the winter if you see any accumulation of snow at all.

Not to hijack, but I also need to select tires.
I don't plan on driving in the snow, as I have another winter car. However, some wet traction would be nice. Not tracking the car, and don't drive like a maniac, so I don't really need summer only. Plus, summer tires get hard in the cold, and I plan to drive the BRZ in the dry cold winter days. What do you guys think about Conti DW or DWS ? What tires sizes work for the stock wheels? |

One needs to be define, what is "cold" for them. I guess, it may differ for someone living in tropical climate vs someone in eg. Canada or scandinavian countries
.IIRC at +5C tire grip of winter tires and summer ones on dry tarmac gets somewhat even. Below that winter tires start winning. That's only on tarmac/from rubber compound grip though. On ice (especially very dangerous "black ice", often forming at 0C) and snow winters may perform better even at warmer temps. If average winter temp is about +10 to +15C, and almost never below freezing, i'd drive summers. If average is about +5, with fluctuations +15 to -5, i'd get all seasons. If average is -10, and there is often snow/ice, imho real winter tires are mandatory. Of course, one may choose to be more on cautious side (especially if it's only car one has), and get tires not best fitting for average climate, but best for worst cases scenarios (even if rare), so to not get stranded due some sudden snow storm for example, or if one plans to go to some place with different climate (eg. visiting some friends/relatives, or going to ski). |

My tire geek friend just said the same thing: Both are excellent tires, but if you want "the best" with no reservations, get the Michelin Pilot Sport 3+. It is the standard by which all other HP all-seasons are judged. Fortunately, Tire Rack has a discount of $11 per tire on them now, so they end up being only about $9 more per tire than the Contis. That's a really good price.
